y’know the southern drawl was the original English accent and most American English is the phonetically correct pronunciation while ‘english english’ was created a good deal after the revolution. Language history is interesting.
Yeah, I’m picking up on what you’re throwing down. Been guilty of that meself, not being a native English speaker. I’m guessing most of the time ‘round these parts it’s an easy shorthand for AJ.
Taking words and butchering them like we do with southern words, and often Japanese words, is one of the most irritating things. Even more so when the people using the corruptions say “It’s southern/Japanese” and so on. Because it’s not. “Y’all” is not a southern word if it’s only used in this way by non-southerners. But it gets constantly attributed to them anyway! And I don’t wanna go into how wrong we got the commonly used Japanese words here, but it is so wrong that we should call them English words.
It’s just unbelievably disrespectful to tell someone else what the words of THEIR language mean. And since Americans refer to the American language erroneously as English, I deal with this pain daily. Being English and watching all these American shows is agony.
I did love when they got away with swearing though, as a kid. Because certain words aren’t rude in America. Hearing wanker on DBZ is still hilarious.
Touché.
And weird is a word. Coincidence? Yes.
Words are weird.
Maybe in the context of this drawing, ‘y’all’ is short for ‘you always’
Yeah, like dock kissing.
“While many Southerners hold that y’all is only properly used as a plural pronoun, strong counter evidence suggests that the word is also used with a singular reference, particularly amongst non-Southerners
“Due to a cultural shift in the United States by non-Southerners using the word, it is now sometimes used as a singular you.”
I was thinking purely visual, so that slipped my mind.
@Liggliluff
yeah, see, your and you’re are kind of a different thing because they’re phonetically identical.
you can’t say someone is using the wrong one when they’re speaking because you literally cannot tell the difference between them when spoken.
which is not the case with every other word that has been brought up in this discussion
As much as using “y’all”
But if enough people are ignorant,
then that becomes the norm.
‘your’ never is used as ‘you are’. Literally is used for emphasizing, even if technically incorrect, but using ‘your’ wrong is just ignorance.
Kind of how “your” means “you are”
And “literally” means “figuratively”
While you are technically correct, in actual use “y’all” frequently get used even when referring to a single person.
Unless Rainbow Dash is more than one, saying “y’all, Rainbow Dash” doesn’t make much sense.
Well put XD
doki
HA!
