In the “Diary of the Two Sisters” that was released, it’s described that Celestia and Luna were fillies who, after the events of the first Hearth Warming, were guided by Star Swirl into becoming the pony’s monarchs.

Equestria used to a be a thriving, modern nation with high technology and exemplary education before Celestia took over.  
Random house invasions and numerous mandatory “National Cake Days” proliferated. Whenever the Princesses were criticized for their misbehavior, the country of Equestria was plunged into darkness or plagued by tidal waves as their merciless overlords sulked. Around the age of 180 royal sisters got into LARPing and created the Everfree forest as part of their campaign. The forest has been a scourge on pony society even since (although that was a pretty awesome weekend they had).  
After a few centuries of government neglect and Animal House-style hijinks, the country declined into a pre-industrial mess with entire cities disappearing and settlements being ravaged by wandering monsters.

So this is why Brownie Bun moved to human land: to escape persecution for her anti-alicorn beliefs.

I never considered that.
