Helped the soundtrack of the first two Sonic games was made by the Bassist of the Japanese band “Dreams Come True.”  
Though, unfortunately, that lead to some music rights issues, and is why we rarely ever hear the original classic Sonic themesong & such reused/remixed in games afterwards. (That’s probably also why the SSB series has only given the Sonic series one new remix, and that was from Sonic 3, and made by Sonic series music contributor Jun Senoue.)

There’s actually a secret route in Chemical Plant Zone act 2 that skips that part completely. Never knew about it until a few years ago; as a kid I would always end up dying or drowning at that part. :(

The muck, was only in “Chemical Plant Zone.” I think it was in the old cult-classic SatA.M. Sonic cartoon too, but it was much different in it.

Oh, yeah, that can get frustrating. Don’t remember any pink mega muck in the Metropolis Zone though. Maybe I played Debug mode too much XD

It has a few cheap death parts, like the part just before the boss (and during it) where part of the platform disappears, and you fall & die. Not to mention all the pink “mega muck” that slows you down, or drowns you.  
Metropolis Zone was more-so that “one stage” for me personally. Mostly, ’cause it was the longest, and kinda tedious.

Or Chemical Plant. Though that zone is from Sonic 2. I’ve always had trouble going through Chemical Plant Zone.

Also, I bought “Sega 3D Classics Collection” for my 3DS, (it includes Sonic 1) and it’s quite good.
