@Beau Skunky: I suppose any sort of drama involving the comics is inevitable. Even if someone if saying something positive about them (which is unfortunately frowned upon on a site like this), or if someone is criticising a particular criticism about them. But in regards to what you mentioned, I’d definitely say that the design helps. Even if not everyone likes the reason why NMR exists.

So much for “not bringing comic debate in here.” If I didn’t refer to the comic as “controversial,” it probably wouldn’t of started.
 
I was just pointing out that “Nightmare Rarity” seems to be the most popular thing from the comic. Especially, for fanart.

Except making Nightmare Moon a separate entity from Luna doesn’t “absolve” her of her guilt at all. The fact that, during the exposition of Nightmare, Luna even outright says that she was led into believing everything it told her and willingly let it into her body. The same sort of deal involving the same exact spirt happened to Rarity.
 
Also, I feel that comic establishing Luna and Nightmare Moon as separate entities shouldn’t be as ragged upon as it is. Without the comics doing that, then it wouldn’t explain the origins of what Lauren Faust said had turned Luna into NMM; a subject the show never even touched up on. And it would basically mean that NMM is Luna’s true personality, and mean that Luna was, by default, evil. Which both brings up some rather unsettling implications about the Elements of Harmony, and conflicts with Journal of the Two Sisters. I, for one, am glad that the comic went that route. As it prerty much solidified Luna as one of my most favorite characters on the show.

Except it doesn’t. In fact, I’d be more surprised if she didn’t exude any guilt if it wasn’t a nebulous demonic force. Making NMM Luna’s true personality, on the other hand, would indeed make her look “unstable”, as you describe.

It would absolve Luna of nearly all the blame no matter how much she says it’s her own fault(because the comic is really bad at making it look like the forces don’t, you know, force their corruption on ponies).
 
And given the amount of guilt she exudes(enough to be considered near-catastrophes on their own), making it just some nebulous, evil, plot-creating force just makes her look insanely unstable.

True, though some even complained about the first story arc being “too dark” for a kid’s/family series. Which I didn’t understand, as it had just as many lighter cute & funny moments too.  
(Ironically, the show has it’s own “nightmare fuel” TVTropes page.)
 
But let’s not bring up the comic drama here.

@Beau Skunky: It seems to me that the controversy has started from the 2nd comic. And largely because some people are (strangely) uncomfortable about the idea of Luna and Nightmare Moon being separate entities.

Nightmare Rarity seems to be the most popular thing from the (now controversial) comic series.

I think it would be better if the shadow bore heavier resemblance to Nightmare Moon.
