I think the key issue here is one of perception versus reality. People not familiar with the fandom may perceive us to be in the same category as furries, whereas in reality, there will be overlap… just like with every other thing that people are.

They aren’t mutually exclusive, furries can be bronies and bronies can be furries. A furry doesn’t have to like ponies and a brony doesn’t have to be a furry.

And keep in mind appreciating the occasional anthropomorphic art does not make a you a furry. A tried and true furry lives the lifestyle.

It’s that simple, stop trolling damn it.

While the two terms are not mutually exclusive, Bronys can be Furries and Furries can be Bronys, this does not mean that being one automatically makes you the other.

My guess for why this assumption exists is because of the anthromorphic art, and I think I have an answer for that. We know that actual horsefucking is wrong, yet we still find the characters attractive in their own way, so humanized/anthro art may be a way to put the characters we love into a form that is similar to our own, so that it’s slightly more socially appropriate. Then again there are those who actually enjoy them as their normal pony forms.

Again, this is just me rambling, but my point is that Brony does not automatically equal Furry and Vice Versa.

“Anthropomorphic.

adjective.

ascribing human form or attributes to a being or thing not human, especially to a deity.”

Straight from dictionary.com. Note that it says “Human attributes”. not hands. not bipedalism. attributes. some of our attributes - that base animals don’t have - are existentialism, civilization-building (and I don’t mean collections of houses- bees can do that) clothing, speech, Written language and religion.

If a quadropedal wolf living in a forest writes books and runs a school in a kids show, even if the wolf has no thumbs of fingers, it is still partially anthro. ponies are basically indistinguishable from humans - socially speaking - and would, without the brony community to deny it just to avoid a very loaded label, be classified under Furries. literally the only difference between typical anthros and ponies is body shape. and sometimes, not even then.

tl;dr ponies are as much furries as the gieco gecko or creatures in redwall.

Ruler of Sheep
gonna say technically yes no matter how much everyone denies it

but you have the right to not want to be called a furry or associated as a furry like some active fans do not want to be called a brony or associated with brony

Well, taking away all of the rule 34 (and there’s a metric tonne of it, at least), a furry is a fan of anthropomorphic (Animal with human-like qualities, such as walking upright, talking, etc.) and/or zoomorphic characters (humans with animal-like qualities, like having fur, claws, pointy ears, that sort of thing).

Seeing as how the ponies have the ability to speak, otherwise we’d all be watching 30 minutes of pony Homeward Bound, they’re clearly anthropomorphic, albeit a very very light morphing.

So the argument could definitely be made that Bronies are a kind of Furry - fans of talking ponies = fans of anthropomorphic ponies = fans of anthro characters = furry.

Now, obviously that doesn’t mean that the two groups are the same, however, to make a comparison: Bald Eagles and African Ravens are both birds, aren’t they?

Ponies aren’t anthropomorphic. They don’t stand on their hind legs and they don’t have hands.

Also, this is an image board. You post images here. Posting text in an image is a sure fire way to get instant hate, even if you are well meaning and genuinely curious about the question.

@Background Pony

I said that Furry shouldn’t be considered a binary thing. There’s people that like it specifically, people that are okay with it, and people that refuse to watch something with animal characters. I don’t generally think of it as a big deal in any direction and consider using anthromorphized animals a valid setting choice.

@Malkor9988

There are people that are only interested in specifically Furry stuff as a fetish, yes. There’s also people that self-flagelletion for sexual purposes instead of for meditation. And some bronies are in it for biped-on-quadruped action. Some people have uncommon fetishes. Do you have a point?
Malkor9988

In my opinion, theres two kinds of ‘Furries’: there’s Furries in the sence they see anthropomorphic people as a interesting fantasy art (like how anime girls have big eyes)
Then there’s ‘pervies’ who see the same thing but as a type of porn.
Sometimes though the line of the two can be blurred.
Background Pony #D1E1
@Sjogre But Disney is filled with movies and cartoons about anthropomorphised creatures, as is WB, Dreamworks…

That doesn’t make furries of people who like these works.

I said that Furries are infamous for it, not that they do it any more than any other group.

Anyway, part of the problem is that people are insisting that these are binary labels when they aren’t. Someone could be a little bit furry, or a little bit furry, or a little bit trekkie or whatever.
Background Pony #F69A
^You’re conflating anthropomorphism in general with the furry fandom. It’s the basic premise on which both fandoms are based, but does not describe the furry fandom any more completely than it does bronies. Maybe that’s what we’re arguing about?
