Well then again, the stone changing process got reveresed before in the show when the Cockatrice tried turning Fluttershy into stone and changed Twily back.
 
But if this is meant to be perminate and dark, lets hope its not beloved main characters or background ponies (Especially Mares) in this scene.  
Actually, I would like to see some ponies being saved from falling for this trap. (Button Mash or Rumble stopping Sweetie Belle or the other CMC from grabbing ahold of one of the fillies she recognizes from school to save her just after being rescued from the spot where they were supposed to be turned into slime at)

Sounds about right. As for what the slime is used for, I rather like the “intelligent building blocks” theory posited below.

So basically, Chrysalis mutated ponies into slime, and I’m guessing as a trap, it would appear they’re covered in slime with their voices but the slime once you touch it starts mutating you into slime?

Oooh, yes. This is relevant to my interests.

Makes me wonder how it must feel to be turned into sentient slime…
 
I suppose Chrysalis must make use of them for various situations, like some kind of “intelligent building blocks/putty”
