That could make for an interesting story. Either from the viewpoint of Princess Cadance or the fellow who will never replace her husband or Flurry Heart’s father.
Or worse yet, Cadance would seek out a male mistress just to maintain the balance…
But she’ll silently angst about him not being her true love.

That… became quite dark. But you have a point.
And now I see Cadance using her crystal magic to preserve a dying Shining Armor to keep their home from falling to the cold north. Kind of like a reverse-Mister Freeze.
Wow that makes this even more depressing I mean the crystal ponies can’t even mourn the loss of a family member or loved one they just have to laugh it off as a mild inconvenience and go on like nothing happened.

I wonder if depressing music/breakup songs became popular would it have the power to destroy Equestria?
I could introduce the fillies and colts to Linkin Park, Hawthorne Heights, and My Chemical Romance :3
From that perspective, it does makes sense.
But I rather live in a place where my life doesn’t literally depend in the mood of some insecure queen/princess.

There’s a pretty big difference between being a little sad or having low self esteem and downright hating each other on a nation wide scale.
To be fair that was an outside force the ponies didnt know about at first and they seem to only come when like your entire society is full of loathing.
To be fair, the show implied the Windigos exist, they never stated it to be true. Every instance of them so far has been in stories and fairy tales.

Honestly they’d probably be safer trying to settle in the everfree forest compared to this.
It’s about par for the course for a comic written by Rice, though.
This is the worst empire ever.
Thing is, you can’t be happy under this kind of pressure. This kind of thing (“Sad/unhappy/etc emotions brings doom”) that’s copping up in various fantasy works is basically means “We are all doomed regardless”.
It’s especially egregious in japanese gods and spirits, that are all doomed to become dark spirits and demons respectively.

A better question would be why was it created there. Ponies wouldn’t just build up a town there as a joke, right? :D
The empire is located in the Frozen North. Yeah, that’s a very rough territory.
That don’t help at all. The safety of the Empire according to this comic depends on Cadance not being depressed, and the crystal ponies feeling even a little down apparently shuts it off.
