Fun fact; E = mc 2 actually comes from the relativistic expression for energy: E = sqrt( p 2 c 2 + m 2 c 4 )
And p = mv / sqrt( 1 - v 2 / c 2 )
Set v = 0, and the p 2 c 2 term disappears and you’re left with:
E = sqrt ( m 2 c 4 ) = mc 2
The kinetic energy of an object at rest (velocity, v = 0). Therefore, the “rest energy” of a mass.
