Fun fact; E = mc ² actually comes from the relativistic expression for energy: E = sqrt( p ² c ² + m ² c ⁴ )

And p = mv / sqrt( 1 - v ² / c ² )

Set v = 0, and the p ² c ² term disappears and you’re left with:

E = sqrt ( m ² c ⁴ ) = mc ²

The kinetic energy of an object at rest (velocity, v = 0). Therefore, the “rest energy” of a mass.
