but before that they start families, have foals, experience peril, accomplish dreams and make friends. And you get to meet their foals! Then their foals’ foals. Then those foals’ foals. You get to see all the sparks and quirks and facial features disseminate through their families. With your practiced, careful eyes you notice them for centuries. Their word choice, their sense of humor, their songs and games.
When after a while you think it’s completely diluted out you see something beautiful breach the ocean of time and you see so many generations echoing through them. Like a rushing, swirling river of color on a current of time.
You thought all of your old friends were dead; that you were one of the immortal ones. But you realize everyone lives on too. You look at a pony and see a burst of Dewdrop, a spark of Big Mac, a sprinkling of Sundae. And because of your familiarity with so many generations before them, you can’t help but feel like you recognize ponies the first time you meet them.
And after that you understand why Celestia calls them My Little Ponies.
