Not a joke. A speech at the Republican convention in the USA was seriously copycatted from ones the Democratic First Lady had made. The official spokesperson just used My Little Pony (and Twilight Sparkle specifically) as an excuse.

Right, as if that drawing of Twilie doesn’t look seductive enough already…
I’ve never managed to trigger someone before. I can see why it’s fun.
Seriously, I could give a flying fig about the actual issues here. Someone just used a pastel cartoon pony as a high-level political defense. That’s how deep the pony hole goes.
Hmmmm, perhaps someone in the news office was caught looking at pony porn, tried to bluff it off as “research” and then one thing led to another and this happened?
Or if the guy had picked a cropped image, which turned out to be porn.
Or maybe part of the statement…
The communications director specifically refers to Twilight. Then CNN uses a fanart image instead of official Hasbro clipart. If the fanart was used without permission, that might be a story in itself.
He actually lists a lot of sources. OTOH, he actually says “Twilight Sparkle” by name.
Every speech like that is identical. They’re so formulaic it’s like claiming that using the line “our thoughts and prayers are with X” is plagiarism.
fuck Pence this is the real dream team
but you ignore all the other people that were named, and for some reason think stating a character watched by millions on a show you yourself are fan of is wrong. Because movies and tv have never said anything important or remembered through out history? it’s not like they have a team of writers or anything.
you mean like Obamas speech on 2/10/07 compared to John Edwards in 9/16/03? hmm but no one seems to care about that.
Look at the two side by side, those speeches have some eerily similar content…
The Onion said they were reporting the news of the future in some articles. The future is now.
“Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn’t.” Mark Twain.
So you think I posted this for scoring political points?
Nah. I did it because this is the funniest Chewbacca Defense I’ve ever seen.
We are in a world where Twilight Sparkle quotes are being used as political maneuvering. And it’s beautiful.
you just went full “derpy” mate, they were showing how similar cookie cuter themes like follow your dreams tend to be. they were citing other notable people who have said nearly the exact same thing. you also ignore the fact obama has done the same thing but Word for word in most cases. Now that’s plagiarism
Calm down lad, don’t get your knickers in a twist.
It’s only here since, you know, giant pony image on a blasted major news network site.
This is why The Onion isn’t funny any more. The real world has caught up with it and surpassed it in weirdness. There’s nothing their writers could come up with that someone in the real world can’t top.
Truth is, it’s probably lifted straight from the First Lady’s speeches, but the Republicans went full…er…derpy by trying to use MLP quotes as being comparable to political speechwriting.
