Indeed. With an ambiguous gender, as the name implies, you can’t tell the gender. A femboy, however, is always a male with very feminine traits where they’re often mistaken for female.

I think I read a similar fanfic once…

I just had one more thought about being a changeling without a queen.  
I would have loved one of the common background ponies from Ponyville to have been a changeling under deep cover. Having taken a pony image for so long that they have forgotten they were a changeling at all and come to love living in pony society.  
Once Queen Chrysalis was defeated and changelings had started going rouge looking for their own self identity, ponies naturally became cautious of changelings hiding in their society.  
Once Zecora perfected a method for revealing changelings hidden in pony form, Princess Twilight became charged with searching Ponyville for hidden changelings. And almost right away she finds that Lyra Heartstrings was in fact a changeling.  
(apologies for going deep headcanon/fanfic!)  
Bonbon being a member of a secret monster watching organization already knew this, but having fallen in love with a changeling that had harmlessly came up with its own silly image and personality of a pony, couldn’t turn her in to the Canterlot authorities and wound up living with her a “roommate”

I’m not sure if I would say they choose what ever gender they want, unless if while a changeling goes undercover in a pony town they can pick a colt or mare to imitate.  
I would imagine while changelings are working under Queen Chrysalis’s rule they would have key/specific targets to imitate and replace, unless their orders are “just pick a pony that looks nice to mimic.”  
That’s why I’m excited to see in the upcoming episode, how the changeling will act free from Chrysalis.  
If that changeling just stays in a changeling form, do they not imitate other ponies unless directed to from Chrysalis?  
Does a drone have freewill without a Queen to work for?
