It’s extensively a connection to both because one is connected to the original and the other is a connection both the original and the one before the original and after the reinterpretation.
If you’re confused, it just proves you haven’t been listening because you’ve been told the reason about five separate times and haven’t actually admitted to learning the origins of the name. lol
But Faust’s user name was a reference to the G1 pony, so in a roundabout way, it’s still a reference to the G1 pony.
Yes, and Faust’s DA username in turn references her favourite G1 character.

I’m pretty sure Lauren had “fyre-flye” as her Twitter handle even before she worked on FiM, and it’s supposed to be a reference to Firefly to begin with.
But her Twitter username was itself a reference to the original G1 character Firefly.
Actually general firefly was a reference to lauren faust.

Personally, I hope we never see Rainbow Mom. I like the idea of Rainbow Dash being raised by a single father.
I dislike the Firefly headcanon as well. I do like Rainbow Mom being Rainbowshine, but I guess there’s nothing official until show comes out and says it.
Sadly, I think they filled the new characters related to the Mane 6 quota this season.

I prefer Rainbowshine, since I like to think the Rainbow name is passed down through the family.
That’s what I go with!
Nothing against Rainbowshine, but Firefly is one of the coolest old-school ponies. More fun to think of it as being her, even if Rainbowshine is a very logical option (she was even standing next to Rainbow Blaze in the flashback scene that introduced him.)
You could always suggest that Rainbow Dash’s mom was named after the original General Firefly.
