At the risk of inciting a flame war, they do keep pigs. I don’t think they’re shown to be sapient.
Cows are, and you could have a case of sapient cows trading their milk or selling it. Sheep apparently are, and they could probably sell or trade wool OR dairy. Chickens lay eggs and do provide a good fertilizer, so there’s a case for them to keep chickens just for egg production.
But pigs don’t provide dairy and their fertilizer isn’t as good as chicken manure, or that the ponies likely produce themselves. There’s really only one good reason to keep pigs, unless you’re keeping them strictly as pets, and that’s for meat. Either the ponies are butchering them themselves, or they sell or trade them to races that do. It’s even arguably possible that they themselves eat actual red meat from time to time. As some people have pointed out here, real-world sheep, deer and horses occasionally eat meat or carrion, and ponies are shown to be more like humans in certain physical respects, such as the fact that they have a gag reflex that’s apparently triggered by Applejack’s sleep-deprived cookery. For the record, I’d avoid dinner at the Apple house on nights she cooks.
Also, they have fishing poles. They might sport-fish, but there aren’t many reasons to want to catch fish otherwise. They’re at least familiar with the procedure involved in luring a hungry fish to a hook in order to capture it and remove it from the water to have a specialized took for that purpose.
In addition chickens DO have a sell-by date. They eventually run out of eggs altogether and they can live for a while after that. Keeping them alive after they stop layng requires you to keep feeding and caring for them, without getting eggs in exchange. There might be chicken retirement farms somewhere offscreen, but standard procedure in the real world for dealing with non-laying chickens is to pull a Logan’s Run on them. So…it’s not altogether impossible that a roasted chicken occasionally finds its way to a pony’s banquet table for special occasions.
I’m probably making a helluva mess out of what were just some sight-gags for the audience, but please to enjoy my fanwank anyway.

I’d think the major story there would be that a calf was talking.
@FSin
With bones.
@cheezedoodle
Me too, it’d be hard for me not to mess with fans. Hehe
It’s a turkey shaped liver! I have one, don’t you?
But if I were drawing a scene like this I’d probably throw it in as a tease as well.
So are their chances to get meat in the wild. It’s either stupid small birds/animals, or high risk of becoming food themselves, to actual carnivores getting to the carcass.
>Maybe this is Equestria’s way to be curteous to the ponies with an iron deficiency?
They’d be having liver, then, not whole turkey.
@Dustcan
They oughta get the protein somehow, and big surprise, it’s way easier to get protein in meat than in vegetables. Pretty much any “herbivores” but the extremely-weak-digestive-system ones (looking at you, rabbits) actually eat meat whenever able.
There was a news story about a calf, once. It said it was killing chickens and eating them. It turns out the calf had a severe iron deficiency.
Lots of places have gluten-free and lactose-free options to be curteous to the people who need it. Maybe this is Equestria’s way to be curteous to the ponies with an iron deficiency?
They can and do.
That the artist drew some random food and forgot to stay with a vegan diet?
That would be really nice. Unfortunately, we all know real reason.
