Circus Freak was born with major problems concerning her voice box and, as a result, had to have it removed.  
Without a voice to communicate with, Freak resorted to using sign language (you know, pony sign language) to speak with her parents, who commonly translated for her to those who couldn’t read the silent language.  
She began miming in her early teen years as seeing the mimes in the circus greatly inspired her, and it was great as it was yet another way to communicate, even though some thought it was a tad silly.  
Freak went to school with Clockwork Crow, the two quickly became friends and Crow learnt sign language in order to talk with their new friend easily, so Freak didn’t have to constantly write down what she had to say.  
As they grew older and left school, Crow began inventing for a living and Freak, not wanting to leave her only friend to join a traveling circus, mimed on the sides of streets for a short time. She got by, but soon Crow brought up the idea of starting their own circus to her, needless to say Circus Freak was ecstatic with the idea.  
So, Crow went to building the circus, getting some helpers to help with making the material for the tents, while Crow built the rest from metal. Circus Freak went to finding other ponies willing to join the “Marvelous Circus of Morbid Mysteries”, which ment handing out posters as she couldn’t actively speak about it. But since she had written so much detail in the posters and made the circus sound as thrilling as it was sure to be, she managed to hire Jumping Jack, the circus clown, and Lucid Dream, the animal tamer and visual effects pony.
 
Circus Freak is one of the four ponies that work in the circus and make it so great, she’s also one of those same four ponies that have been approached by Steamboat and are now living with him in the unnamed world.  
She still doesn’t know why she was picked. Clockwork Crow was picked due to their specialty with metal works and inventing, Lucid Dream her skills in witchcraft despite it being socially unacceptable and her being a pegasus, and Jumping Jack with his ability to trick any audience with his wide range of impossible acts.  
Maybe one day Steamboat will tell her, or she’ll find out herself.
