Just tried doing a quick paintover with solid black, and it looks much better (though I’m still trapped a bit in “cannot unsee” territory). The issue is that the image is combining a common cylindrical shading technique with a vaguely cylindrical shape, making my mind scream “cylinder”. Getting rid of the shading blocks that association. Another hack to try is changing the white to something that isn’t the same color as the background, so it doesn’t look like a transparency.
