To be fair, the only times we really saw them in action was when they were either a) up against super-powerful goddesses and demons or b) vastly outnumbered by changelings. It’s like pitting the Marine Corps against the legions of Cthulhu.

Well, princesses and heroes can’t be everywhere at once. Somepony should be able to defend citizens in their absence, and both Royal Guards and Crystal Guards seems to be unfit for that role…
Hey give them a break, the Royal Guards are about as effective as they need to be in a kingdom ruled by magic-wielding alicorn Princesses with nearly god-like powers.
Still, they’re supposed to be trained professionals at the very least. And, to put it mildly, they don’t behave like ones…
It’s not their fault, man, they’re not main characters.
