I thought the episode was pretty variable in its quality. The song was completely unnecessary and too feel-baity, too (which is funny because there was another chance that they could have had a sing and I was quite surprised when they didn’t). I’m disappointed that they basically spoiled the resolution of the episode in all the previews, which made it look like the changeling coming to Cadence and Shining was in the middle somewhere and there’d be more to it. Other than that, I thought the story was good, and I enjoyed Spike’s bout of character development.

Starlight was once again kinda just there to be there, but it’s good that they acknowledge her and Sunburst’s friendship as well as her studying under Twilight. All the As You Knows really bothered me; they should’ve kept it in the beginning, but they kept repeating those details over and over and got way too specific to just be simple callbacks. The “all evil but me” aspect of Thorax somewhat bothered me, but then there was also Kevin in Slice of Life, so it could just be Throax’s perspective that he was the only “non-evil one.”

Thorax was absolutely adorable, and I really want him to have another episode. I enjoy how the Aesop didn’t revolve around accepting Thorax but Spike relinquishing his fame for the sake of standing up for his friend. “The Brave and Glorious” thing was funny for a while, but then it got kind of grating, and they even called back to it in the song! (Jesus, why!) Overall, another average episode for Season 6. I feel like this season is going to be the dump season for the new guard, just as the first season was for the old guard; hopefully, Season 7 will have them come into their own and write some more truly great episodes.

Sanity is overrated

Only one episode always results in a lack of material, especially since I usually aim to get the interviewee in solo shots. Having others in the scene works sometimes, but not always.
