Twilight wouldn’t be anywhere near the pony she is without Celestia’s guidance and nuturing.
Is…is that supposed to be a plus? I’d love to see Twilight following her own hopes, dreams, wants and friendships without the pressures and brown-nosing that she’s ruled by to please Celestia. We could see her friendships actually develop with the other 6. Form unique dynamics and all of that, not just with Spike and RD a little.
@Deon Miller
I completely agree. However, they won’t give Celestia an episode until they are convinced they can write all the premiers and finales without Celestia assuming direct control of the plot in bad ways.
Celestia is the highest authority in Equestria, and we don’t know what she knows or how she thinks, but as a result, when Celestia says something outrageous, everyone in the show still believes her….and thus, in the moment, we the audience believe her too.
If Celestia was a relatable character before S4’s end, would she have sent Discord to find Tirek in the manor that she did? No way, it would of seemed completely unrelatable, doubly so since she seemed to like Discord even more after he so casually ‘betrayed’ them and he gave her flowers.
Celestia not having a character is too valuable to Hasbro, and I really don’t like it. They really need to step up and lift the safety nets around the show and not have the premiers and finales rely on Celestia’s ‘mysterious and unknowing wisdom’. She can still be wise while also being relatable, its unreasonable that they’ve went this long without trying.
I think the writers seem to lack any character for Celestia knowing that she BARELY show up for any development in almost every episode. Couldn’t she at least have some screen time, or her own episode for once? Jesus Christ! Princess Luna had her own episode, why not Celestia?! Seriously, the more she barely has any screen time or any dialogue, the more the writers seems to lack of the characters they rely on to have more development. Hopefully before the S6 finale, we’ll get more development from other characters instead of the Mane 6, and yes the same goes to Starlight Glimmer.
While you do got a point, I doubt there’s gonna be a Celstia episode in season 6. But probably season seven, that is if season 7 is in production.
I hope so, for the sake of the audience.
Thanks for responding. I didn’t know you were gonna respond.

Celestia is being gracious and courteous, offering help yet also not wanting to impose. Twilight doesn’t have to answer to Celestia anymore, since becoming a princess of her own domain.
At the same time, Celestia displays humility in saying she herself needs Twilight’s help, perhaps implying she’s already relied on that help over the course of the show. She’s thanking Twilight for that help.
I don’t think either of us are going to see exactly eye to eye on the matter. It’s clear we view the show in different ways and expressing an opinion from either side will simply continue the debate ad infinitum.
@CleverTwist
I always find it frustrating when people complain that someone posted a big comment when they’re trying to make a point and they take the time to actually explain what is inside their head to facilitate the exchange of ideas. Specially when said people actually post comments that are similar in size, in response. If you don’t want to talk to me, remember that you’re not obligated to.
Interesting argument that the show, having a long running time, actually had less opportunity to develop characters. I think I understand what you’re saying though: the cartoon has more interesting things to focus on rather than the character in question. So, I guess characters like Celestia, Luna, Discord and others don’t deserve to be explored because the cartoon always comes up with new things all the time. Wait…
Explain to me why is it that I’m acting like I’m “entitled”. Because from my perspective, what I’m doing is saying that this character would benefit from actual development, the cartoon would benefit from this and I’m explaining why is it that I hold this opinion. In a certain way, I AM entitled to at least voicing my opinion, because I like this cartoon, I pay for the material the franchise produces. Of course this doesn’t give the right to dictate what the cartoon does or doesn’t, but it certainly gives me the right to voice an opinion. Another thing I don’t understand is why am I defending myself and my opinion, when YOU too would like to see Celestia getting more attention from the producers.
My point is that since they’ve given that development to Luna, they could very well do the same for Celestia. I’ll say more… The reason Luna got this is because they saw her as a popular character that people wanted to know more about. Therefore, this whole discussion about Celestia needing to be fleshed out as a character. I find it mind blowing that Luna has less screen time than Celestia and STILL feels more as a character than Celestia.
I’m not getting on your case. In fact, you’re the one that implied I was joking in my original comment and engaged in conversation. What I’m trying to do is have a conversation. If you disagree with me and you’re convinced of the absurdity of the idea that Celestia is actually an awful teacher that neglected Twilight’s behavior, that is fine with me. But, just because you don’t like it, you can’t invalidate my opinion that the abuse the character has suffered from the plots that demanded it be put in certain positions, the neglect it’s suffered from character development standpoint, and lack of attention to detail has damaged the character and the cartoon to an extent. Not intentionally, of course, but this is a problem that they, the producers, created, and it’s well within their reach to fix. So I don’t think that asking for my favorite character to actually get a character is somehow taboo. You can say that I’m demanding things when you start seeing me giving death threats or some nonsense I’d never do.
Okay. I was this close to just throwing my hands up and saying tl;dr to that wall you put down, but I had to give it at least a chance to put things to a different perspective.
Now that I have read it, I regret my initial decision.
You sir, are FAR to critical of what the show has put forth in terms of story and contextual information. Not everything is or needs to be laid out black and white for every single character. Some characters, like Celestia are going to get left behind. This is a 6 year running show with dozens and dozens of recurring and non-recurring characters that have left impacts on the show and fandom both large and small. Not everyone is going to be remarkable, and some have left a lasting impression, but what they all have had, at the very least, is given us a piece to a growing narrative.
Instead of acting like you are owed something from the show, maybe you could appreciate what we DO have on Celestia’s overall character. Rather than pointing out why the other princesses are better due to them being given specific spotlights to add more to their characters, appreciate that we have had any at all. They could have just as easily kept Luna out of the picture like they did most of the first few season, despite fan demands for more of her. Same goes for Cadance, the few times she’s been around.
All of them have been given only a minor amount of screentime, each adding something here and there. Whether good or bad, it’s something rather than nothing, which could just as easily been the case.
Many people, myself included, enjoy filling in the blanks to lore and narratives when given minor bits of information. We enjoy wondering the what could’s and the how’s and why’s of the world built by the show, because then when new episodes ass to what we know its satisfying when things we don’t expect come out of it. Every little piece counts towards the greater perspective. And everything inside of that is meaningful in it’s own right.
So rather than get on my case over why I enjoy what we DO recieve from the show about Celestia, and instead of boo-hooing over what is missing and what you expect to meet your specific standards, maybe take a moment to appreciate that fact that we still have a show to look forward to at all. And that to me is worth more than simply sitting there demanding to be given what you want.
@CleverTwist
Essay? You should see the shit I used to post on MLP Forums and Equestria Daily. Well, to keep things short, I’m not going to address what we agree on.
First off, what is a Mary Sue to you? The term is so overused it barely means anything now. Second… Whatever Celestia is supposed to be, she already “is” in the heads of everybody, the only problem is that they never let her be it on the screen, which is what we want to see. Think about it. Anything they’d do to Celestia, if they decide to actually use her, it’s already what people think of her. She already IS “the boss”. I think most people agree with that. So how can it hurt her if she looks like the boss when she’s already supposed to be the boss? Celestia is supposed to be a different kind of character… What I think you mean with Mary Sue hurts the main character of story and it’s more a problem with the writer’s ability to convey conflict and resolution rather than the character itself.
Another thing is that when you say “start” it gives the whole point an idea that it’s to be continuous. The image it invokes is Celestia ALWAYS doing everything and nobody wants that. Just as I don’t want to see Twilight ALWAYS having all the answers, I don’t want that for Celestia, because that would, indeed, ruin the character. This isn’t a binary proposition like that. She doesn’t have to swoop down amid sun rays all the time if she does it once, when it does make sense for her to do it.
So if Celestia has a life for you, then tell me about all the things she does and you can start with how did she fix the problem with the parasprites in Fillydelphia. What you’re saying about Celestia is the definition of headcanon. Not that it’s wrong, but it’s not the character that is on the screen. Nurturing? I never saw Celestia even bonding with Twilight because there is always the plot of some episode in the way and she needs to leave ASAP. As far as I know, Twilight got a bunch of books to read from Celestia and that is it. To clarify, I can easily imagine it, but I can also easily imagine the opposite.
I like Celestia most of them too, the problem is that I don’t have to keep imagining stuff to fill the blanks in order to like Luna or Twilight. But I do with Celestia. How did Luna help Scootaloo? She entered the dream and gave her a talk. How did Celestia teach Twilight to use the gravity inversion spell? She <blank>, or Twilight learned it herself from a book. How did Cadance teach Twilight to remain calm? She taught Twilight a cute little breathing exercise. How did Celestia help Twilight deal with her nervous breakdowns while she was studying with her? <Blank> What kind of teaching methods did Celestia use? <blank> Did Celestia ever need to be angry at Twilight because of her borderline obsessive compulsive nature? <blank> Did Twilight fear for her well-being because she couldn’t meet Celestia’s expectations? Or even her own projections of Celestia’s expectations? Yes. We know that. Why? What did Celestia do to Twilight? <blank> See what I did here? Fill that blank over there. This is the reason bullshit like Tyrantlestia and the like exist.
So you imagine that Celestia was a close teacher to Twilight. What if next episode Twilight just says that she never got too close to Celestia because of some random reason the writer needed to serve the plot? Can you say that it would contradict canon? Right there this whole idea of Celestia and Twilight laying down next to the fire as Celestia helps Twilight understand some complex magic vanishes.
Please don’t talk to me about Nightmare Moon. The whole thing could’ve been a movie to explore all the consequences and all the problem that led to it. Then it got turned into a lazy two-minute flashback in which the two don’t exchange a word before Celestia grabs the Elements. We’re lucky some animator remembered to give Celestia tears. And then later we got a Nightmare Moon ruling Equestria with Celestia banished to the moon and everything seemed fine as it was. Insulting.
People in this fandom need to stop praising the little crumbles they can find every now and then and ask for substance.
whew Quite the essay there. Had to read all that at 2:30 in the morning and didn’t really think about what you said. And while I do still disagree with your assessment, there are a couple things we have in common.
I agree with you that the writters of the show don’t appreciate Celestia nearly enough as they should and that she absolutely deserves more screen time to develop her character. She is used often for a joke or brief cameo and it’s not fair to her character. While Luna and Cadance have been given episodes dedicated to them, Celestia has been left behind and that saddens me. I’d love to see her in an episode just by herself, like a day in the life of Celestia sort of deal. Maybe develop her relationship with Luna a bit, something along those lines. I think that would do wonders for her.
However, that’s where I start to disagree with some of your points. I don’t want Celestia to start, as you put it “show who’s top bitch”, because she runs the risk of being labelled a Mary Sue type character. I fear that if the writters put her in situations where she just easily solves a problem without any tension or build up, she becomes nothing more than a plot device, a living deus ex machina that show uses when all other options fail. Yes, it’s implied she has incredible power, but much like Twilight who is a prodigy and was many times (and still is) called a Mary Sue, Celestia can easily fall into that same trap.
To me, Celestia does have a life and story beyond what the show has explicitly shown us. It’s how we interpret these things that help the characters grow in our own mind. The fandom has done so many things with these characters over the years, even the creators have noticed and taken some aspects and put it into the show itself. In the end, personal interpretation is how these characters become bigger and better than just what we see in each episode. Our own idea of the why’s and how’s helps fill in the blanks the show doesn’t address, or just merely hints at.
You may not see Celestia the same way I do, but I see a lot more to her than what the show presents. While it is true she hasn’t been given the best treatment out of the Princess crew, I still like her the most out of all of them. I love her demeanor and attitude, her gentle nature with everyone she encounters and communicates with. Her motherly nuturing of Twilight as she raised her into the character we all now today, all the guidance and advice given over the years that allowed Twilight to become a better pony, make friends and take on the role of a new Princess. All the pain she endured after banishing Luna to the moon.
But like I said, you may not see her the same way I do. I think there is still potential in Celestia to have her moment, if the writters give her one. I don’t think she’s dead, she’s just fallen behind. She’s not out of the race, and I appreciate any chance the show has to put her on screen so I can praise the sun.
@CleverTwist
Personally, I think that Celestia CAN be just that. Or rather is supposed to be. This poor character needs some love so that we can see all the things she’s supposed to be doing when she’s not being abused by the plot.
I get what you’re saying to the other user, but Celestia is a fictional character, not a real person that has a story and a life. She needs to be given those. You say that it’s unfair to judge the character from cherry picked moments, but there is too much “telling” about Celestia and nowhere near enough “showing”. I’d be fine with it if Celestia was the only princess and we didn’t have three others actually taking part in stories and making a difference. Specially now that Celestia’s status as quest giver has been taken by the “Map of Lazy Mission Selection”, Luna has been shown in positions of wise mentor and Cadance actually has flashbacks where she interacted with Twilight, and has actually taught something to Twilight. To me Cadance’s arrival and the focus on Luna killed Celestia and she’s been dead since the third season.
It’s a weird discussion because people are right when they say that Celestia is doing all the great things that she does when she’s off screen. The problem is that we’re past the initial seasons of the cartoon and the world these characters inhabit has evolved and grown larger and more complex. Most important characters evolved with it, but Celestia stayed the same.
The problem is the attitude the writers have towards Celestia. The only thing they do with her is use her for a joke, quick exposition, setting up a situation for others to fix it or the Worf Effect. When Luna or Cadance need to fight, they kick ass. Celestia gets her’s kicked. Luna and Cadance teach. Celestia is called a teacher, but never actually teaches.
Except when Celestia is around, because when she’s around, things always happen so that not even they can fix the problem. It’s because people keep saying things like this: “If Celestia came from on high everytime trouble arose she wouldn’t have learned any of those important lessons about friendship that her character basically revolves around.” So, Rainbow ruins any message about friendship because she can clear Ponyville’s sky by herself?? I don’t understand why people use this kind of argument. It’s this kind of thinking that has relegated the character to the corner of any story the cartoon tries to tell. There seems to be two characters that just don’t mesh together, the awesome teacher/ruler/protector that is doing her job all the time when she’s off screen, but for some reason people seem almost afraid that if Celestia actually gets something done in an episode the universe will implode.
Goddammit, I have something stuck in my throat ever since that stupid wedding: I want to see Celestia actually wipe the floor with that retarded bug. Or the King of Edge that has aspirations of being Sauron. Or the King-Jerk of Chaos. I guess I’d be happy if Celestia somehow showed who’s the top bitch around those parts, because I’m tired of seeing Luna being awesome, Cadance being awesome, Twilight being awesome and Celestia sucking.
Now excuse me, because that’s enough butthurt for a night.
How about all the years before the show? When she was a student in Canterlot, Twilight was tutored by Celestia. I’d say that is some significant guidance. And every situation she got into over the first few seasons? All of them, aside from the Wedding where all tests to ready her for the task of becoming a point of authority beyond her studies. If Celestia came from on high everytime trouble arose she wouldn’t have learned any of those important lessons about friendship that her character basically revolves around.
And now that she IS a princess, Celestia did and is still doing what she can to at least offer advice and help when she deems it nessessary but still allows Twilight to figure things out for herself. That is inarguably Twilight’s greatest strength and she wouldn’t have become the character she is now without those experiences. There is so much more to Celestia’s character if you take the time to really look into the why’s and how’s of everything the show has presented to us, instead of just labelling her off a few cherry picked moments.
@CleverTwist
What guidance? Where nuturing? Mlp shows nothing of this, only moment in the beginning were Celestia like “you are wizard twilight” and then “you are alicorn twilight”. All we know, Celestia let Twilight use her royal library. Twilight was a teacher for herself all along!
*Unless you need to deal with a crazy equality cult, a time-travelling bitch, a centaur monster, Discord being an idiot, or really anything because I’m actually useless most of the time you actually need me. By the way… Did you read all the books I sent you instead of actually teaching you anything, after strapping you with a baby for you to care for? I hope the cartoon retcons me into your past so this touching scene can make any sense one day.
Aaaaaaaand this is why Celestia is best Princess. Her loving and tender nature, mixed with her clever and wise attitude and at times an impish level of humor makes her an all around great character.

What guidance? Where nuturing? Mlp shows nothing of this, only moment in the beginning were Celestia like “you are wizard twilight” and then “you are alicorn twilight”. All we know, Celestia let Twilight use her royal library. Twilight was a teacher for herself all along!
All jokes aside, she really is a great character. Twilight wouldn’t be anywhere near the pony she is without Celestia’s guidance and nuturing.
