This sentence gives me the creeps. It fits to the horror story about Petunia I told on Thursday night at Pumpkin Glow’s campout in Legends of Equestria.

“I hear you, my master! I’m on my way!”

A subtle one. So subtle, that it’s barely recognizeable. But Petunia can smell it, it is her gift, granted by her special talent.
 
 
I now imagine her always smelling some scent she had no clue about what it was and where it came from and that everypony told her that they can’t smell anything and that she’s just imagining it, when she talked about that smell, leaving her completely confused.  
Then, one day, she stumbled over some bones in a forest and wondered to what creature they belong and examined them to find out. She found great enjoyment in it and realized that she really likes to do that.  
Then her cutie mark appeared and she looked at it, saw that it’s bones and figured that her special talent is paleontology, because it happened while she was examining bones.  
And then it came to her, she suddenly knew what the strange scent only she can smell means!  
Excited, she returned home and showed her parents her cutie mark, who were shocked, so they called Applebloom, Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle immediately over to ask them for advice.  
Scootaloo accompanied Petunia to distract her while her parents talk with Applebloom and Sweetie Belle about the matter and then, in the sandbox outside, she noticed that smell again. This time she knew what it was and she eagerly started to dig…..

What kind of scent do you get off bones that old?

Since her sense of smell is directly connected to her special talent, she should only be able to smell the scent of fossils, as long as paleontology is her special talent.  
But a version of her in an alternate universe might have a different special talent, but the same cutie mark, and in that universe, she could indeed be good at finding corpses, making her the best crime investigator Equestria has ever seen.

As a related part of this talent, do you think in a darker world she’d be taught to smell cadavers? If we were to have a MLP crime-thriller would she be the pony that regularly finds the murdered corpse/
 
Would she do this as a side-job to pay the bills?

An important part of her special talent is digging in the ground and who else is digging in the ground often? Dogs. And dogs have very fine noses and can smell even very small traces of scents.  
So, she has a special talent that is related to digging and that’s why an ability to smell the fossils in the ground comes with it, to make her able to find the fossils. This is absolutely genius.  
I really hope we see more of her.

She smells the scent of fossilization. It’s like ripened apples to her.

If you look at her eager expression, it’s apparent that she already suspects that a ponysaur is buried there, not that she’s digging for the off chance to find one.  
I wonder how her special talent exactly works….. It seems to come with an instinct of sorts, like Pinkie Pie’s “Pinkie Sense”, just for bones in the ground and without the twitching. Now I’m even more interested in her.

Parents can be so paranoid the moment they see skulls and bones. It’s only warranted as far as poison labels or certain situations involving cults/gangs.

Did they really think she was a grave robber or a murderer?
