agreed, it’s not wrong of her to mention it, I think it’s just my bias on how I’d expect it to be done, if that makes sense..
 
going back to that example from the ‘For whom the sweetie belle toils’ episode, my bias is a bit strong because what she told Sweetie Belle seemed to exude some form of her being in control now over that problem that she was making reference to, which is naturally a little more uplifting. She still referenced the whole Nightmare Moon fiasco through it, but it was much more subdued and it implied her having dealt with it / probably still is dealing with.

Whether she’s doing it appropriately or not, seems an in-character moment for her:  
she likes to help others avoid her own mistakes, discourage them from dwelling on theirs, etc.

just for a second, think about how many comments here talked about Luna, as opposed to talking about the mane 6. Is this about the mane 6 anymore, or is it another one of those Derpy Episode sort of jokes?
 
 
basically, an episode showed there’s much better ways for her to reference her troubled past, without sucking sympathy and making it more about her.
 
“Princess Luna: I understand what you’re going through, Sweetie Belle. I too have a sister who often shines more brightly than me, and with this, I have struggled.”
 
you see how not so dramatic it is and simple? it’s a simple emotion of having trouble with feeling inferior to your older sibling, there’s no mention of her imprisonment, nor unnecessarily bringing up her fucked up memory of going berserk with jealousy.. Imagine just how awkward telling it like that to Sweetie Belle would’ve been. This is what this feels like here, although obviously, to a much lesser extent.

It’s funny, but I’ll just say that the hypocrisy is great, because I don’t actually think it’s that big of a deal that Luna sounded (unnecessarily) dramatic in this page, still, keep shitting on people for thinking differently and laughing a little about it, contribute to stinking up discussions and then shit on the people who took your baits whenever someone rhetorically says, ‘this is why we can’t have nice things’.

Some people sure are easily _~triggered~ by Luna showing up with the sads, huh.

To all those naysayers in the comments, yeah Luna angst is a bit overdone, especially in the comics.  
But consider this - it’s been relatively recently that she’s returned, not four years have passed.  
She will stew with it a lot more, even normal, everyday people suffering PTSD have therapy for years…  
This? Attempted regicide, attempted sororicide, attempted genocide (by making it always night).  
Yeah, she’ll not be over it anytime soon.
 
Plus the series uses her as a mentor (just consider the CMC), to stop ponies from commiting similar, albeit smaller-scale mistakes. Why? Mostly because she has the unique perspective of being a reformed villain (No, Discord still doesn’t make any sense, reformed or not), so her insights are mostly spot-on.  
Though with magic, there’s no such thing as small-scale in MLP…

Finally someone said it, I really love Luna, she’s the best princess for me, but it’s anoying as fuck that the show always have to bring the NMM drama. Beach episode? Luna drama. Hearts warming eve ep? Luna drama. IT’S TIME TO STOP!!

Though I wish the funny side of Luna often seen in the other comic issues would be represented in the show more. We need more “Luna Eclipsed” type screen-time for her. Though maybe Celestia should get some first.

You know, context is everything. If luna had brought this up out of the blue in the middle of casual conversation on an ordinary day then I’d agree she needs to shut up about it. But the mane 6 had just gone on an evil rampage due to magical corruption and are feeling terrible about it so it’s only fair that luna be reminded of her own experiences and try to console them.

Nightmare Moon created the Nightmare Force herself AFTER she was banished to possess the moon creatures. It’s basically a self-inflicted brain parasite like the Tantabus. No contradiction there and it’s the reason for her fear and shame in the Nightmare Rarity arc.

So even the comics don’t follow the comics.
