I think he refers to when cheerilee said “a cutie mark appears on a pony’s flank when he or she finds that certain something that makes them different from every other pony.”

the show lately has been showing how much of a mixed blessing that can be.

cheerilee still hasn’t said yet how it moves from a pony’s flank to their hindquarters

Headcanons (at least the ones I make) are just placeholders until proven or debunked by actual canon. If any are proven, that’s great. If any are debunked, I’ll just accept the canon then make different headcanons with the newly acquired info.

There’s a great story by Bad Horse called “The Magician and the Detective,” in which Fetlock Holmes suspects Trixie in the theft of a valuable painting. Late in the story, Holmes points out to Watson a set of wooden balls he had seen in Trixie’s hotel room. He deduces that, since the balls are simple wood, they cannot be one of Trixie’s gaudy stage props, and must be for her personal use as tools to practice levitation magic. The balls have been worn down into perfectly smooth spheres by levitation alone, a process that takes many years, indicating to Holmes that Trixie has made regular, dedicated use of them since she was a filly.

We just had an episode where Gabby intimidated the Cutie Mark Crusaders by being so good at everything they couldn’t give her proper direction and now we have an episode where Starlight is terrified of doing anything outside of her natural talent lest she look incompetent.

The hyper-specialization thing seems to be working less well for the characters this season. The episodes seem to be deconstructing the magical destiny the cutie marks represent lately.
