Not only was there Bonnie’s bag having Lyra’s CM as a clasp (or, yeah, maaaaybe she just borrowed Lyra’s bag, but where’s the fun in that?) there was Lyra’s end of it: she was looking grumpy when sitting alone but considerably cheerier after her BEST FRIEND arrived. (Also, notice her hoof. It’s reaching clear across the table with the cup beside it, and later, the cup is held in her hoof in the usual bendy hooves method. Therefore, not being able to grasp the cup a la the hands/humans meme was not what she was grumpy about as some say.) Until that cheek-squish in Rainbow Rocks came along, and then of course Slice of Life, this was the Lyrabon episode.

“Canon” still does not mean “the parts of a thing you like and agree with”; the term you’re looking for here is “out of continuity”– in this case meaning a joke episode that isn’t intended to be considered part of the “real” story– which still wouldn’t really count for much given how fast and loose this show plays with its own lore and in-universe history.

However, if you want to take the inclusion of Kevin as more than just a reference to the exact line at that moment in the Mayor’s meta speech, are we sure they even saw him? He was sitting in the back row and the only ones who seemed to notice him were the kids. He could’ve very well been keeping to the edges or even changing into a pony for the rest of the time.

The whole thing is rather meta. Fans started shipping them because they just coincidentally were stuck together in the background a few times. The staff got wind of this, and started doing it intentionally. And it snowballed from there. Since the shipping’s been referenced several times in interviews, and usually answered with a wink, as it were, I think it pretty much is the most confirmation we’re going to get. Especially since they can’t just outright say it. And only one person connected to the show that I have seen has outright said anything opposing it (I forget exactly who it was from, but a tweet saying something to the nature of “friends can just be friends without being shipped” or something.)
