Has everyone forgotten about NMM’s FIENDship is Magic issue fixing that little problem?

For me, I thought Sombra being not quite the same as other ponies worked well for why he became so brutal and cruel. It’s not that he was ‘born bad’, it’s the fact that Princess Amore allowed him to suffer for years despite knowing about him and how being close to the Crystal Heart hurt him.

Sure, he didn’t have to go down the path he did, but Amore certainly didn’t do anything to help guide him off that path. Personally, I rather liked that. But then I can relate to just how angry and hateful someone would feel if someone who was supposed to watch over and protect them just stood back and allowed them to suffer.

Plus, I’m rather fond of the fact that he outright says he loved Radiant Hope, but he was so angry at Amore’s perceived betrayal that he was willing to torment her by sending the Crystal Empire away. It’s not often you see a “Love isn’t enough” situation in stories like this.

Considering how happy he was when he was growing up with Hope, it’s easy to see how things would’ve gone very differently if Amore had helped him sooner (or, like, at all). But she didn’t, and things didn’t, and everyone suffered for it.

(Please note that I’m aware of the follow up arc, but I’m only talking about the Fiendship is Magic comic).

Some interesting trivia about Sombra from comics, thanks.

Still, there is one big reason I prefer the show’s canon (or at least ambiguousness) about villains like Nightmare Moon and Sombra:
There’s no excuses about them being manipulated by outside forces or fate.
Luna and Sombra are responsible for their own individual darkness.

It makes Luna a more ‘mature’ character to have gone so off the deep end by her own choice,
not being deceived and coerced by some forces of darkness.

Same with Sombra being a more interestingly brutal villain for choosing to be one,
not being literally born as an evil creature.

At least the comics don’t make any sympathetic excuses for Chrysalis or Tirek (that I know of).

The horrific psychological abuse that King Sombra inflicts on his people, and the sickening mind-controlled war in ‘King Sombra timeline’, both show why it’s probably for the best they destroyed such a hardcore monster, after all.
I like to think that guy was just as bad as Chrysalis and Tirek, if not more so.

Yeah, Sombra falls under the category of, “Monster that must be destroyed,” I think. I especially liked that Fiendship is Magic comic where Twilight learns of his history, and she notes that while she felt sorry for him and could understand how he turned out the way he did, he still needed to be stopped and so she doesn’t regret his death.

I’d argue that as a unicorn (instead of the mindless beast he seemed to be in his modern appearance), he was worse than Chrysalis and Tirek. If we go by the Fiendship is Magic comic, he even set up a deadman switch to banish the Crystal Empire simply out of sheer spite.

I think it’s interesting just how angry and vicious Chrysalis got here from one simple suggestion:

“What if you didn’t have to [feed/starve]?”

That reaction revealed a lot about her power structure, I think.

Oh. Sorry, the comment came right after Alanasolo’s “I’d redeem everybody” comment so I automatically assumed…

Also, because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to believe you were referring to the “aroused” comment.

That’s a pretty small percentage of those franchises’ villains. At any rate it’s perfectly fine that we disagree, as long as you don’t think me a bad person for it.

Hey, we aren’t insulting each other despite not completely agreeing; that’s pretty good for a thread with the “drama” tag. And even in the case of Chrysalis, I’m not opposed to her being redeemed or becoming a good guy. I just feel you’d need a lot more buildup to make it feel natural.

@Alanasolo
As a side note, be glad I’m not in charge of a franchise. I’d redeem everybody eventually.
@Alanasolo
you too?
YAY! I’M NOT CRAZY!

I almost want to see what’d happen if you were put in charge of a franchise that traditionally has grey morality like Gundam. There’s almost always at least one irredeemable monster per series.

Except for Gundam Build Fighters. And maybe the goofy SD Gundam stuff.
