Actually, in the group shot after Chrys reemerged from the rubble pile, you can sort of make out Jade Experience’s ant-mandibles surrounded by an aura. He doesn’t unleash or manipulate anything, yeah, but it appears they are the conduit for his magic, exactly like Tirek. :)
Taking your words extremely seriously, Spike hasn’t died yet in any episodes I’ve seen. King Thorax’s magic is just especially glowy.
I also haven’t seen Thorax use any magic in the show after his transformation, this is just an artist’s interpretation.
