The formula right above the result says 30+X = (180-80)/2 = 50, which means that X = 50-30, and somehow Sunset got everything right but that subtraction.

No, Sunset just made an arithmetic error at the end of an algebraic computation. It happens. Twilight Sparkle didn’t, so she wins the contest.
I’m presuming there was more than a single question asked. It might have been a math bee, with the first wrong answer giving an elimination. When you’re solving at speed, it’s easy to make minor mistakes.
