Both of you are right.
 
Having split personas develop their own identities and sense of self can be very interesting. I’ve seen it done quite well in many series, like Nova from Rayearth, Piccolo from DBZ(albeit second generation), and Nightmare Rarity herself in the comics, who still identified as Luna’s other half while merged with Rarity’s own personality.
 
And, as you both already know , Nightmare Forces was never actually a thing. It was a lie Luna told the Mane 6 that Luna admitted to in the latter half of the comics, and admitted it was all her. There was no nightmare forces before Luna. Its hard to believe such a long lasting rumor got started just by some people reading comic panels without the context of later pages
 
Nightmare Moon lived on because, inevitably, Luna chose to become Nightmare Moon and descended into madness due to her own incredible power and unsettled mind. The sheer soul splitting of the Elements in the premier of the series resulted in Nightmare Rarity in the comics, and an incredibly unhealthy outlet in the show in the form of the Tantabus.
 
Problem is, the Midnight Sparkle really doesn’t fit as a separate entity, which is where @Vinyl Fluff seems more correct. Nightmare Moon existed for 1000 years, it being able to be separate from Luna is no surprise. With Midnight Sparkle, a magical artifact drew her spirit into darkness, and saddled her with more power then she ever wanted. Problem is, Human Twilight is parallel to Luna in other ways, and Midnight Sparkle’s memory was saddled with her, and a dark corner of her personality wanted that power back. Twilight was a little TOO afraid of Midnight Sparkle, but fear DOES beget fear, so she was at risk as she gained more power. It was an alicorn level dark side of her personality in the body of a young girl who had barely awakened as a human-alternate unicorn. Its no surprise that Human Twilight struggled with her darkness more then Sunset after tasting that kind of power, and only survived by ‘ascending’ and fighting it back.
 
Human Twilight’s mind WOULD of been consumed had she not gained the power to defeat it, so her getting wings due to Sunset’s intervention and everyone willingly giving her support felt she earned wings in recognition of Luna’s legacy, but she saved herself with her friends help BEFORE she went darkside of her own volition. No princess bs was good too.
 
Sunset Satan was more or less the same, but Sunset didn’t need to ascend to conquer her own darkness in the mind, so I’m guessing her ascension will be a lot more significant. She’s got an enormous amount of alicorn magic in her before actually becoming an alicorn, and that’s pretty unheard of(Then again, so is her element, since Celestia and Luna never earned the element of Empathy.)
 
That’s my thought on the matter.

I know that Midnight Sparkle is a turntable demon from Friendship Games, but in Legend of Everfree she equivalent to Freddy Krueger.

Well, I like split personas developing their own identities and sense of self. Brings up lots of cool questions on selfhood, free will, and identity. And unlike the Nightmare Force debacle, an independent Midnight does not negate Twilight’s own initial folly and mistake, and she would have become independent after the moment of corruption, and not before like Luna.
 
Also, an independent Midnight increases the chances that she’ll come back in a crisis moment to get into a proper city-wrecking slugfest with another antagonist in a future movie. I just want to see that girl cut lose!

I thought it was just a fear as well. When Sunset read Twilight’s emotions for the first time she mentioned there was no Midnight Sparkle seen. Mostly it was fear and doubt. But, thankfully, she overcame that and embraced her powers. Now to see if she’s ready to spread friendship elsewhere, we would have to see. Or even facing her previous peers.

No what I mean is that “Midnight Sparkle” wasn’t a separate being that had been created. Similar to how the comics made Nightmare Moon out to be a separate being that had just taken Luna over, rather than the actual show canon in which it was all Luna.
 
I’m glad they didn’t write it so “Midnight Sparkle” had become its own thing after Twilight was corrupted, a separate being that remained even after the end of FG, that could take over as she feared, like they showed in the beginning of the movie. And in reality it was just Twilight’s extreme fear that led to that belief.
 
The horn and the “mask” (actually her glasses) are more endemic to the character. They were ponying up, and since this Twilight is the counterpart of a unicorn, she got the horn again, as well as her own glasses transformed. They’re not so much parts of “Midnight Sparkle” than elements of herself, “magicfied.”

I’m so glad in the end they made it clear that Midnight Sparkle being a separate thing that could come back and pose a threat was merely a fear Twilight had and not an actual thing.
