they gave her access to a computer, but no internet access. she’s been typing this entire thing into a text file, thinking that it was other ponies asking her questions.
Having read it I find the premise behind this blog, that the asylum would give Twilight a computer and Internet access, dubious.
cue sketchy van with “cookies” painted on the side
well, some experimentation might be possible if you had sufficient facilities and restraints and could tempt the author to your basement laboratory with cookies.
And something you can’t experiment with, to boot!
but when it does end, we’ll never know if she saved equestria, or succumbed to the evil shadows. some people actually don’t enjoy staring up at the ceiling at night trying to go to sleep wondering what was the fate of a fictional cartoon unicorn.
It’s not exactly an ending, since the fic is not finished yet…
Edited
I despise ambiguous endings unless they are pretty much perfect, so I am officially taking it off my read later list.

What, I’ve had major surgeries and life-threatening stuff happen to me a lot. I’ve learned what pain meds are like ‘cause I’ve had pain worse than childbirth, apparently…

There’s hints of it, and downright voices and stuff telling her it’s just a dark magic covering Equestria and tricking her, but I’ve read journal entries where the author talks about how he loves ambiguous stories/endings, but not ones hashed together at the last moment like Inceptions; “Is it a dream!?” (though that’s kind of a misunderstanding of the fact that the top was his wife’s totem, not his, but still…)
So my guess is, we’ll never get a solid answer one way or another whether it’s some darkness magic tricking her into thinking she’s insane and it’s all in her head, or if she actually is insane and it’s all in her head.
It struck a chord with me mostly because, well, MLP is a wonderful fantasy universe I dream of that’s all in my head, and other things. So eh.
Oh, right. I never read that because it seemed too sad. Also, a fic where it was all in her head? Nah. Unless there’s a plot twist where she’s being tricked or something, I don’t think I’ll be reading it anytime soon.
A fanfic.
