The “cheese holes” were a symptom of the changelings’ fundamental incompleteness. They got better.
Think of this as changelings somehow acting like ponies, in that there are three different types of changelings. Well, two, since there aren’t any earth changelings…
haha, when i saw this image, that’s almost word-for-word what i thought, exchanging ‘adorable’ for ‘cute’ - other than that, exact thought.
