It’s basically been his character when the new writers took over. He only dropped that during the last 30 seconds of equestria games, gauntlet of Fire, and The times are a changeling. Everything else has been a showcase of him screwing everything up somehow.

Spike looks so dejected here. I can’t help but think that there’s some part of Spike’s mind that tells him after each one of these failures that “You’re a dragon… you’re supposed to be better and above all of this” and that weighs on him.

Spike stood up for him when no one else would. Spike risked tossing away the innate fame and fortune of being a hero to the empire and even being ostracized by friends and loved ones on behalf of Thorax; all because Spike knew the real person under the black shell. But also, Thorax’s honest appreciation of Spike’s actions and personality were not tainted by prior propaganda. He cares for Spike because of who he is; Spike is Thorax’s best and greatest friend.
