Not a queen? Ooh! Another idea: She stumbles into the underground den of a dimwitted species like kobolds or knolls, they are so awed by her appearance, they make her their queen, and she uses them to attack some city. X3

Ah, that makes me think, ponies get needlessly nervous around princes and princesses because older, much eviler royalty has created a cultural stigma within society, like King Sombra and technically Nightmare Moon, who was a princess transformed into a (potential) evil monarch (and was in an alternate reality) who then transformed back into her original princess appearance.
 
Actually, royalty wouldn’t completely describe the situation because of Discord and Tirek. Both nearly conquered the country if not the world, and would extensively add to the stigma, despite not thinking of themselves as high royals (a lord answers to others higher than himself, a king no one. :3 )

She’d better get back at it. She’s got a lot of work to do if she wants to squeeze out another hive.

Let’s not forget, though, Twilight’s reaction to an imagined crime against Celestia being committed in “A Bird in the Hoof”. Panicking, thinking that Fluttershy would be banished AND/or imprisoned magically. Clearly, lèse-majesté laws are still in effect in Equestria.

Well they haven’t thrown the country in war after war, claimed unquestionable divinity, committed genocide, etc, etc. A lot of what our royalty did in our reality were stuff that would make even Chrysalis freeze in ‘wtf’. I’m going to give Celestia for keeping a country together for a thousand years in peace.
 
Doesn’t mean I can’t help but feel agitated that most of her accomplishments happen off screen.
