This is no worse than an idea I had..  
What if Celestia and Luna are Cadance and Twilights future selves?  
Twilight gets sent back as an attempt to break the element usage… Cadance gets pulled in too…

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

so, if I get this right:  
Shining and Cadance have a foal, turns out to be Twilight, Twilight brings her foal-self back in time to her parents.
