After she met Big Mac at the Apple/Pie Hearth’s Warming celebration, Marble had a huge crush on him. Whenever she thought of him, she couldn’t help but blush. His strong build, that honest, friendly look in his eyes, and his kind, quiet demeanor made her believe that he was the one for her. When she was with him, she felt like she could relate to him on a personal level. Big Mac didn’t even need to do anything to make Marble feel special.
Marble continued to see Big Mac every Hearth’s Warming. During each conversation they had, every second of eye contact, and every touch of his hoof, Marble’s crush on him only grew. She wanted desperately to tell him how she felt, but she was too painfully shy to do so.
One year, Marble felt a confidence that she had never felt before. “This is the year I open up to Big Mac,” she told herself. However, when Hearth’s Warming came, Big Mac didn’t show up. While she was too shy to ask anypony why, she heard whispers among the Apples that he was “invited to celebrate elsewhere”. That Hearth’s Warming was lonely for her, but she was filled with hope that Big Mac would surely come the next year.
A year passed, and Marble was disappointed to find that Big Mac was absent once again. “He had more family matters to take care of,” said the Apples. She wondered what family matters could keep Big Mac from attending Hearth’s Warming for two years in a row, but still she hoped that he would return soon.
More years passed and Big Mac still didn’t show up. Marble stayed hopeful at first, but her faith began to fade as time went on. She eventually accepted her fate that she would never win Big Mac’s heart, but there was still a tiny sliver of hope somewhere inside of her that he would return.
As per Pie family tradition, the time came for Marble and her sisters to consult the choosing stone. Limestone went first; she was pointed to her former employee, Zephyr Breeze, and she dutifully went on her way to find him. Pinkie was already engaged to Cheese Sandwich by the time she consulted the stone, but it just confirmed that Cheese was the one. Maud had been disowned for falling in love with a mare, so she was skipped. Finally, it was Marble’s turn. To her immense delight, the choosing stone pointed her to none other than Big Mac.
And so Marble, with a newfound sense of hope, timidly but bravely made her way to Sweet Apple Acres. When she got there, Applejack was the only one home. She told Marble that Big Mac was living in another house, and she gave her directions. When Marble arrived at his house, she was greeted by a purple mare who she assumed was pregnant. Big Mac came out with a young colt on his back, greeted Marble, and introduced the purple mare as his wife. In that moment, Marble’s heart shattered. All her hopes and dreams of winning over Big Mac came crashing down on her as she ran away in tears. She didn’t even tell Big Mac why she had come; it didn’t matter anymore. She retreated back to the rock farm and didn’t look back.
After that day, Marble lost all hope and ambition. She was still there to support her sisters with their new families, but there was no hope for herself. Over the years, as her sisters had children and became busier with their lives, Marble faded into the background. She didn’t feel needed anymore and therefore became severely depressed. First, she got rejected by her crush and then her family pretty much forgot about her. From the way Marble saw it, she might as well be dead.
One night, Marble decided she had enough of her miserable life. She couldn’t take that feeling of despair and loneliness anymore. She waited for everypony to go to bed, and she started writing her final note to her family. She was just about to sign her name at the end when she heard a knock at the door.
Upon answering the door, Marble found nothing but a basket placed on her doorstep. As she looked closer, she found a baby sleeping in the basket with a note that said “please love and take care of this baby”. Knowing that her sisters would probably be too busy to properly care for the baby, Marble took him in and gave him food and shelter. For now, this baby depended on her so she decided not to take her life that night.
The next day, Maud and Limestone were surprised to find their sister cradling an unknown baby and humming to it. They had subconsciously noticed how depressed Marble had become, but they were too busy to acknowledge or do anything about it. Therefore, it came as a surprise to see her smiling again. They eventually found her scrapped note in the trash and were shocked and heartbroken knowing just how extreme her feelings of uselessness had become. Blaming themselves, Maud and Limestone confronted Marble about the matter and the three had an emotional heart-to-heart.
After the Pie sisters reconciled, they had to decide what to do with the baby that was dropped off at their doorstep. Knowing how important he was to Marble, they couldn’t just give him away. Luckily, since he came with a note asking the recipient to take care of him, they didn’t need to look for his parents. Marble took the baby to the local orphanage to collect some legal forms and she adopted him. She was officially his mother. For the first time in forever, Marble felt pure joy and fulfillment. She named her baby Beryl, after a gemstone, and took him with her to his new home.
Ever since, Marble has felt happier and more fulfilled than ever. Realizing their mistakes, her sisters began making more of an effort to make her feel important and loved. Marble eventually made up with Big Mac and is now on good terms with him, but it’s still awkward seeing him at the annual family reunions. Beryl has been loved and doted upon by the entire Pie family, and he couldn’t be happier. Since his arrival, the family bond has been stronger than ever before. Years ago, Marble never thought she would end up being rejected by Big Mac and saved by a baby on her doorstep, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. At long last, Marble is happy and content with her life.
