Fukubukuro is a Japanese New Year tradition where stores fill mystery grab bags with premium items and sell them for half the regular price. Fukubukuro roughly translates to “mystery bag” or “happy grab bag” in Japanese. Here we have Princess Twilight Sparkle dressed in a kimono and loving what she got in her grab bag: a plushie of herself as seen in the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic episode “Hearthbreakers”.
 
Fukubukuro has become a big New Year’s Day tradition here in Hawaii, too, in part because of large ethnic Japanese population in the state and Japanese tourists who shop at all the luxury stores in Waikiki. Ala Moana Center, the world’s largest outdoor shopping mall, has popularized Fukubukuro in the islands with participating shops offering grab bags of their own every January 1.
