Considering how Nasuverse magic works, I think ponified Nasu mages wouldn’t necessarily have to be unicorns.
 
I think it would be something like this in a crossover, unicorns get one natural magic circuit or set of circuits around their horn and perhaps pegasi would have them in their wings. However it’s entirely possible to have circuits in other parts of the body in the manner that normal Nasu mages have them and mages can be of any type of pony, even earth ponies, as long as they have the magic circuits.
 
Ponies from mage families would have a huge edge over unicorns and pegasi with their singular natural magic circuits because they have the benefit of circuits being intentionally built up over generations and their Magic Crests.

Figured she’d be a unicorn, what with her distinguished mage heritage.

I love ponies in skirts …
