That’s how I interpret it, too. They’re portraying a story for something similar to a Christmas pageant/play. They’re just acting out a nativity scene, and it’s not meant to be taken literally.

I think Zecora is portraying a single magi, meant to represent the magi in general. Also, it was never said that there were three men, just three gifts. And they visited Jesus a few years later, in another location, when he was a tiny bit older.

But where are the three wise men?

I don’t think the “unfortunate implications” apply. This isn’t them actually representing the Biblical characters and story. They’re performing the characters like as on a stage, for a play. All nine characters here are acting; they’re actors.
