Who says a nickname is meant to shorten a name? Nicknames are often pet names, meant to be cute, not quick. Besides, in this case, her name is being shortened.
 
Starlight Glimmer = 4  
Glim Glam = 2
 
Damn near every character in show is addressed by what appears to be their full name 90% of the time.
