I think shapeshifter Rep’s species is more interesting.
I recall that as being pretty normal for childrens’ fantasy stories back then, period. Not just MLP.
Of course I was a child, so I usually didn’t care.
That was the case for a loooot of characters and creatures in G1 Dream Valley,
so many things appearing in one story then never again
I’m not sure if MLP FIM has still caught up yet on the number of different species/entities.
People are wise to that trick these days, after xkcd 774 popularized Poe’s Law.
If I may be so bold, I would like to recommend “[Where I Watch] My Little Pony” by user sun_tzu on forums (dot) rpg (dot) net. It’s a good summary of a number of episodes, yet is written in an interesting and entertaining way. While I was growing up watching G1, I believe the summaries are also good for those who have not or do not want to watch any of the old stuff.
Well, I know there was the Smooze, Tirek, uh… Evilak. And that’s about it.
Oh, even just to check all those awesome vilians?
I never watched the G1 series or did any research on it, because it never really appealed to me. That’s why I didn’t know about them.

Because of the sheer speed that technology went from typewriters and pagers and lcd keychain pets to entire computers that fit in your pocket that hook up wirelessly to the internet.
Anyone who lived through that feels how bizarre this world has become.

Furry’s weren’t really a big or well known thing back then and there was no internet for people to talk about how much they hate furries anyway.
How would anyone complain about her? That was G1. Bronies weren’t around then.
You really shouldn’t compare G1 and G4 anyway. They are completely different in so many ways.
