Well, actually, what started the fad was her face being visible all the way back in the first part of the pilot. What we see here is just the moment when the animators officially acknowledged it.

On a side note, where are her eyelashes?

If I’m not mistaken, this was the scene that started her cross eye fade. Her face wasn’t supposed to be seen here, but someone messed up, and everyone liked her eyes so much, they just kept it.
