Nearly every tool in Equestria is based on human designs. For some reason, they didn’t go the Zootopia route of having everyday objects adapted for ungulate use. Or they didn’t think about doing so, seven years ago. Or they had thought of it, but discovered it’d take longer to think up exclusive designs. We see benches with backs, picnic tables designed for bipeds, cooking instruments and utensils not all of which are designed to be gripped with one’s muzzle, et cetera. Despite this, having hand tools in Equestria has had a certain comedic element the past seven years. ^3^

You’re assuming they can shoot magic beams. Quite a few unicorns are shown to barely be able to do anything beyond basic TK and a light spell. And basic TK means they probably can’t just float their swords across the room at the target and expect to hit it.

Maybe they’re just used to the aspect of close combat. Either that, or they don’t have good aim.

What’s the point of a handle and cross guard if you never have to hold it in the first place? And why not just launch it at him instead of charging? Seems like a stupid thing to do when you’re a unicorn.
