@Beau Skunky
Stylistic variance is more acceptable in free fanmade works, but when someone is getting paid to draw a comic by the company that owns the IP, and (more importantly) you are the one that’s providing the money for the comic the standards people hold said artists to (namely that the art at least be recognizable as being related to the source material, character designs at least be somewhat recognizable when compared to the official show designs, and not making the character named greta a fat chick for the first time in comic and cartoon history) will become more severe.
Comparing fandom reactions to the two is like saying “you didn’t complain about the food at the soup kitchen, so why are you complaining now that you’re paying twenty dollars a person and the quality is the same? That argument doesn’t really hold water with that big of a hole in the bottom of it.
P.S. I know Beau Skunky isn’t going to see this post, but I’ve seen others use this argument and felt it should be refuted.
@SmokySkies
I think Fosgitt’s are pretty cute actually.
Honestly, I think people wouldn’t complain at all about Fosgitt’s art if he was a fanartist. If say Malphy, or anyone else with an unorthodox style was working on the comics, people would be hating on them instead.
I understand Fosgitt isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s getting old hearing how “terrible” he is on every single Fosgitt image. (And nobody can ever say anything beyond like, “omg itz sheet/suxorz,” or even be polite or mature about their critique…) Frankly, I dislike Agnes Garbowska’s “round emote face” art way more then Fosgitt’s style, but I don’t bash her constantly. (And her art can be cute sometimes.)
Frankly, I rather liked Fosgitt’s “Rocky Horror” parody cover art. (Though, usually the cover art is better then the comic’s interior art. That applies to most of the IDW artists though.)
Also, I don’t really wanna get back into the Fosgitt-drama again, (it’s kinda souring me) so I’m going to click “unsubscribe.”
@Beau Skunky
I’m sorry, but I think Malphy is a better drawer than Jay Fosgitt.
Proportions are not really there (still better tho), but at least, his ponies are cute and good looking. They don’t look like some modeling clay.
@Twilatron217
I love pugs. :P
Besides, it kinda makes sense Discord would give her a more “homely” disguise. If she looked like a supermodel pony, (like Fleur-de-lis) she’d look suspiciously like her original form. I kinda like her “ugly-cute” design, (which I think is intentional, for the reason I just stated) and how she looks different from other ponies Fosgitt draws.
I understand his style isn’t everyone’s taste, but I tire of people insisting all the comic artists, or all fanartists should emulate the show style exactly, or insist it’s the best/perfect art style.
Y’know, according to some G1 MLP fans, the new show ponies don’t even look like ponies to them either. One said they look mice to her. So even the show style isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, (admittedly, I used to dislike it to, before I got used to it) nor is it the “absolute & perfect design” that a pony should look like.
They resemble real ponies no more then Fosgitt’s does to me.
@Twilatron217 Compares the two
No, she doesn’t. She clearly has pony features. I don’t care if you like his style or not, but stop lying just to make him look bad.
@Twilatron217
While Odie pony Discord is admittedly weird, I actually like his adorkable design for Celestia’s normal pony disguise.
Also, I blame you too. :P
@Background Pony #1841
I think I actually prefer fat Greta. She looks less generic, & unique to me. I’m probably the only one feels that way, given all the drama over her. lol
@Anonycat
Here I go again…
Fosgitt NOT copying the show art style exactly is actually why I (and some others) like his art. (In fact, honestly I prefer fanartists & such who draw in their own style too.)
In fact, he’s the only one (besides Katie) who doesn’t, (though, it’s nice to see variations on the show style, and I see some hints of the show style in his art like the small snouts) and personally I wouldn’t mind others trying different styles on the book. It’s a bit disheartening to see fans who want the book to just be one art style, or just look like copy-and-paste pony vectors taken directly from the show. (Honestly, those copy & paste vector comics make me cringe more then Fosgitt’s worst stuff.)
I hate repeating myself from the other drama threads, but I don’t think he intentionally stole those armor designs, considering how strict the staff are on not using fan material. (While the designs are uncanny, they are honestly kinda generic anyways, and similar to what we see guards wear in the show) as stated I believe he was looking for reference for the show, and assumed it was an official art piece. Sega & Sumo Digital made the same mistake years ago. But let’s not bring that debate here please, as there already was plenty of other discussions on it here already, and I’m done repeating myself.
Honestly, it bugs me more, his critics, and haters are eating this controversy up like candy. It’s like they don’t even care about the moral situation, or want to know the whole truth of what happened, (or understand the possibility that Fosgitt, or whoever gave him the reference might’ve just screwed up, rather then “stole”) and are just using it to fuel the Fosgitt & IDW hate bandwagon.
Ironically, the fanartist Equestria Prevails is actually cool with it, and even admitted they like Fosgitt’s art too.
Also, as I stated, he actually has cut down on the bipedal poses (which seem to trigger people) so he seems to be listening to some fan critique, and honestly his art has improved much over the Fluttershy & Daring Do issue. (One of his worst ones.)
I don’t see him as perfect, nor “best artist evar!!!1” I’m just saying he’s probably getting more hate then he deserves, that it’s getting old seeing the same people reminding us constantly how much they hate his art on every Fosgitt image, (to the point where people who favor it are afraid to speak on them even) and honestly it’s disheartening bronies are getting so close-minded on how people should draw ponies.
If people can hate his art, people can like it too. That’s all I’m saying.
Neither are Fosgitt’s

By that standard, you probably shouldn’t even like the art in your avatar.
Who thought it was a good idea to let him draw?
I love pugs. :P

You think that’s a “normal pony”?
She looks like a pug for Christ sake.
A pony according to Jay Fosgitt

While I agree with the toy inaccuracy, I don’t mind what you posted here at all.

Yes. We all blame you.
Yes.
I can and I do blame you.
Yes, yes they can.
Can you blame me?
I mean WTF EVEN?
Just look

Okay, no, you can dislike someone’s art without being insulting to them as a person for no reason.
I think he was only given a name, and wasn’t even told to watch the episode, that someone would explain it to him.
His teeth are too big.
