I personally feel Starlight is overhated in every appearance she makesIf you want a further discussion with me on this matter, comment below
Its one thing to have a character that knows how to be good and just did bad cause of an extreme situation (Luna), but in Starlight’s case we see a character who wants to be good but honestly struggles with identifying when something is morally wrong.
Just seeing her making the effort to improve herself, even while she makes mistakes at it, is one of my favorite things about her story.
If you dislike Starlight, I have no problem with that. However, I think it’s a bit unfair of you to imply that OP lacks the ability to think critically. Moreover, the examples you give seem to be more of personal taste rather than any sort of objective proof.
When was Starlight depicted as weaker than Twilight in the season 5 intro? She was never given the opportunity to fight Twilight face to face in that two parter; if anything, we saw her wield magic powerful enough to rip cutie marks off ponies.
Equestria as a whole has always placed a much greater emphasis on forgiveness than we do in the real world, not to mention because of the time travel nature of Starlight’s last exploit, most ponies are probably unaware of what she did. It should come as no surprise, then, that the mane 7 and ponies of Equestria would accept Starlight with open arms once she expressed her genuine desire to become a better pony and move on from her past.
Prior to meeting the mane 7, Everything Starlight had built up in life, including her social abilities, revolved around the idea that having no cutie mark would leave to a better a life. When Twilight shattered that worldview, Starlight was reduced back to her most basic self again. It only makes sense that she would lose much of her confidence after realizing that everything she believed in was faulty and immoral.
Starlight’s most questionable decisions were always made when she was under immense pressure. Even in our world, people will often default to what is most familiar to them in times of overbearing stress. The pressure is the result of Starlight’s lowly opinion of herself; more than once she has questioned whether or not she is even capable of becoming a better pony.
Starlight’s questionable actions are also the result of her simply not knowing how misguided her decisions are. Having lived most of her life with no real meaningful relationships, there was little opportunity for somepony to point out the flaws in her thinking and correct her. Fortunately, the mane 7 is now filling in this void for her. As soon as they realize it, they will advise Starlight of the mistake she has made and attempt to guide her back onto the right path; when not mentally or physically obstructed, they are anything but oblivious to the matter.
Even though everypony else has moved on, Starlight still seems to have difficulty shaking off her past. Knowing the damaged she caused and the potential destruction she could have brought about, she struggles to forgive herself for her past actions and deeds. This lingering guilt is why despite reassurances by the mane 7 and the townsfolk, she still hesitates to see herself as belonging with these ponies. The season 5 finale might have resolved the external crisis, but Starlight is still clearly battling with an internal crisis raging in her conscience.
Although it was ultimately Thorax’s actions that finally took out Chrysalis, that blast of love was only a small part of everything that led up to it. Much of the progress made by the protagonists, including the idea to release all the love, was the result of ingenuity and quick thinking on Starlight’s part. We didn’t specifically see copious amounts of praise for Thorax was because there was no opportunity for it; Celestia advises the ponies leave so the now reformed changelings can have room to recuperate.
I can’t say anything about the comics as I haven’t read them, but as for the toy, why wouldn’t Hasbro hype up the EQG specials by releasing toys of the new characters that will be showing up? I understand why people might be upset because of that (I too wish to see a mini of Luna, Aria, or any one of the Shadowbolts for that matter), but from a business perspective, that decision makes logical sense.
This is a comment from a person of quality.
OP likely doesn’t realize Glimmer was liked as a villain (when Larson wrote her) but has since been butchered by Haber. Such examples include:
-Unexplained power increase between beginning of season 5 when she was clearly weaker then twilight to stronger then her at the end of season 5.
-Characters (mane cast and village) forgiving her in 30 second song at the end of season 5
-Completely changing her characteristics from a socially adept manipulator to “socially awkward” despite no other character treating her that way. It’s unrealistic to expect someone with charm to just forget how to talk to others.
-Odd decision making at times such as brain washing the mane 5 despite them being pretty compliant to her request for help with friendship lesson.
-Disconnect between her guilt for what she did and her constant avoidance of friendship lessons or using mind control magic.
-Disconnect between her bad behavior the audience recognizes but the characters in the show are oblivious to.
-Constantly bringing up her past despite it being resolved in season 5’s last 30 seconds and repeatedly shown in show no one has a problem with her.
-Characters crediting her for what Thorax does to save everyone in season 6 (it would be like Shinning armor claiming credit over defeating Sombra instead of Spike and Cadence).
Add to this her dominating the comics last several stories with her outdoing everyone else involved and that she got a EQG mini before Luna, Sonata, Aria, anyone else from FG or LOE movies.
You can see why people are sick of her.
fairy-Rarity?
I personally have no problem him either.
I posted this on EQD earlier today
“Personally, i don’t think there’s anything really wrong with him. It’s more or less the fandom making him out to be a huge problem. That’s just how i see it. I get it, it’s one thing to not like a character. It’s another thing to make hate campaigns, make hate art, and complain about how your lesbian headcanon between Twilight Sparkle and one of the mane 6 or your fanfic between your OC and twilight will never come to be because “he stole mah waifu.” These jokes ran way past it’s expiration date”
Also, if he’s supposed to be the handsome bad boy rebel cliche that fans have been complaining about, why has he shown very little to no traits of that so called “cliche” throughout the EQG movies?
Edited
To be fair, the hate for him has died down quite a bit.

She’s been practically forgotten.
Both of them are overhated.
Yeah, a lot of hate does seem to come from salty shimmer fans. Plus I can’t understand the rationale that some of them have regarding Glim Glam. Like you mentioned some think that Shimmer should’ve gotten that spot or that Glimmer “stole” her position which makes no sense seeing as Sunset has another series she belongs to and she isn’t a FiM character so she stole nothing.
My thoughts exactly. That and I see where the staff is going with adding the 7th character. Returning a balance to the mane cast. 2 unicorn, 2 pegasi, 2 earth ponies, and 1 alicorn.
The hate I’m referring to from the Shimmer fans is from those who think the staff should have just brought her in instead of adding Starlight.
I’m a big Sunset fan, would love to see her show up in the main series if only for a single-episode appearance or a cameo, and I still like Starlight.
To me, what makes Glim-Glam interesting is that she clearly tries to be a good pony, but she doesn’t quite get how to do that. She’s got a wonky ethical compass, and she’s blundering her way into redemption and friendship, despite occasional backsliding and her obvious anxieties. It’s a neat characterization and one that makes her distinct enough from both Twilight and Sunset.
Personally, I think most of the hate comes from the Sunset Shimmer fans.
I like Starlight.
It’s a misspelled image macro making comments on things lots of people on both sides are tired of seeing.
Even liking Starlight, I don’t like seeing seeing images pointlessly complaining about the hate.
People who literally can’t stand to look at her without complaining should filter her, people who can’t stand those people should either report them if they’re breaking rule 4, or ignore them. Makes life a whole lot easier.
