The trailer did not say “If Twilight defeats King Somber and save the Crystal Empire, she will be crowned Princess and made into a Alicorn!”  
It just said she getting closer to being ready.  
My thought it something as major as Twilight being made into an alicorn and becoming princess over something would be saved for a feature length movie.

If the 8 minute trailer gives anything, Celestia mentioning Twilight ‘closer to being ready’ and ‘next level of your studies’ may point towards this. MAY point towards this.

For me, Alicorn Twilight will mean that her character arc will be mostly finished, and that will lead to fewer Twilight episodes in the future.

I still think it’s an illustration error. Also, honestly I don’t mind if she becomes an alicorn. She’s Hasbro’s & DHX’s property, and they can do whatever they want with her.

Until anything about alicorn Twilight is confirmed I’m going to presume whoever Hasbro hires to do vectors has screwed up again.

I can see this being a great stand alone episode.
 
A permanent change to the character though? I don’t think they’ll really do it.
 
They might do it, and it could totally work. The element of magic ascending makes enough sense for us to theorize about it non stop for the past 2 years.
 
Hell, if they actually go through with something that permanently alters a character this much, they might be willing to do the same for other character too. We might actually see a ‘Dash joins the wonderbolts’ episode, or even the crusaders getting their marks for once.

It’s Twilight’s new season upgrade. They’ll probably stick an extra horn on her by season 4.

Y’know what? The possibility of alicorn Twilight doesn’t bother me one bit. So long as Twilight’s character stays likable, how much power she gets is of little consequence.
