I mean considering that Lauren Faust said that she came up with him after watching Star Trek. I think it is safe to say he was always meant to be a bit more evil version of Q. Honestly, if you look at what exactly happened in his first appearance outside of that line by Celestia nothing he did was what I would call overly evil. He was just kind of an asshole Trickster type, one who wanted to take over the world sure but he seemed to care more about screwing with ponies rather than actually hurting them.

Said over a backdrop of ponies cowering in a field of flames, yeah.
I actually like the days when Discord, being a creature of chaos, was considered the devil opposed to the holy force of harmony however silly his antics might look.
@IceKitsune
You sure it wasn’t just because he sounded like Q and had the same powers?
I guess that people listened to this and ran with it:
Before my sister and I stood up to him, he ruled Equestria in an eternal state of unrest and unhappiness. Luna and I saw how miserable life was for Earth ponies, Pegasi, and unicorns alike…
I always found the early fandoms depictions of Discord as some kind of Super Evil I want to destroy everything and make everyone suffer villain very silly. I know we didn’t have much to go off of, so I don’t fault writers back then for it, but really even with what we had he always struck me as just a slightly more of an evil Q, which is obviously intentional.
It just seemed to me that a lot of people back then either didn’t understand this, or did and actively chose to ignore it.
I only disliked it when he wasn’t funny about it. This is why I love Pony POV Discord.

Whenever I see a fangame or story blog that has Discord as a last boss, it does give me a nostalgic feeling.
