Doesn’t matter. Language evolves, and Royale has quite cleanly replaced Royal when it comes to this term. This is a pun now thanks to linguistic evolution.

Thanks mate, pretty answered the question at hand.
It is the French variant of royal, but only has the “e” when it is singular and feminine. When masculine it is the same as in English, and when plural it’s spelled “royaux”.
Battle is a feminine word in French, so you would have to spell it “bataille royale”.

Exactly! Cadence is written with an E and… wait… wrong thread.
Haha jokes aside, Royale is the french variant of royal if I’m not wrong
Huh. I always saw it spelled with an E.
Well I stand corrected.
Weird, I’ve never seen that spelled or pronounced without an E.
@PonyPon
It’s not a play on the title of the Japanese film/novel, Battle Royal is the correct spelling of the term for a fight to the last man standing. These ponies just happen to also be royalty.
The Japanese film/novel is technically the one with the incorrect spelling. Andy Price did his homework
Edited because: Made my point clearer.
You missed the pun.
“Royale” doesn’t mean the same thing as “royal” though.
It’d be a pretty darn convenient one if it is.
Cuz just straight Royale would work as well.
its probably just a spelling error.
It says Battle Royal like Battle Royale, but Royal doesn’t make much sense in this context because that’s just referring to one member of royalty, possibly one fitted for battle.
Though not nearly as catchy, I think Royal Battle would make more sense.
?
Also, I think Andy Price is still the only of the MLP comic artists to put a title on the first page or two of every single arc (possibly issue?) he draws. Though I feel like usually they’re between the panels rather than inside.
Also, love the art design here. Similar to what we saw in the Chaos Theory and Reflections arcs, which I really like because of Celestia and Luna’s designs when done that way. Same for Cadance and Twilight as well.
