It’s not so much a lack of telling his crew he left, it’s that there was nobody to tell because the majority of them left. Specifically the Writers, because the few good ones were frustrated with the terrible ones who were trying to throw crap after crap at it… and I say crap like headcanons and whatnot, not just stuff from poor episodes or whatever.
 
Couple that with several douche bags on the team that were stupidly controlling over stuff they didn’t have any reason or right to control over. They’d have just sucked all the motivation from him to keep trying.  
By this point, more people probably would’ve figured it was dead anyway, so…  
It’s more disrespectful from the others, since he organized it as a team effort of sorts, and then ended up practically being the only one doing anything, and having all project killing issues come up from others over stupid reasons.

I remember going to the first threads a few years back and since day one I knew the project was never going to be done.

I dunno who he is, but if there’s anything to be ashamed of, it’s that he just kept without even telling his crew and fans why he was leaving. Disrespectful.
