She threw the crystal to spike, Spike picked it up and fell off the castle. That is ALL that was seen by the crystal ponies for Spike’s heroism to suddenly become legendary. Shining tossed Cadance, Cadance caught spike and the crystal heart, placed it where it belonged, and declared herself the crystal princess.
… even in that context, Cadance did a LOT more than Spike.
Twilight knew Spike would have to be the one to return the crystal heart back to it’s rightful place since Twilight was trapped and couldn’t teleport out so she told Spike to go

they ARE 1,000 years out of the look and all societies around them have continued to evolve during that time, so gullibility is probably commonplace for them at this time.

Spike wasn’t that important. He helped twilight out of a trap that he fell into right afterwards, then he fell off the castle. Twilight and Cadance were the real stars there, especially Cadance in front of the empire.
I still don’t know why Spike gets billing as the hero there but Twilight and Cadance are ignored.
I guess Crystal Empire Part 2 would count, but its effects weren’t apparent until Season 4. Eh. XD
Possibly. Spike had no importance to that though and I imagine that Scorpan would be brought in only when they are having a finale/season opener that heavily involves Spike.
