@Background Pony Number 17
~Scootaloo’s parents are super busy.
~Leave her with a guardian/caretaker since they can’t take care of her during work (Scootaloo is also disabled and cannot fly rendering any pegasus-only situations impossible for her to attend)
~She got good at ditching her caretaker and hanging out with Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom
Scootaloo: Y’know, some ponies would dream of having parents like that.
Rainbow Dash: Yeah, right! Name one.
Scootaloo: <sigh> Me. Growing up, I never thought I’d be the best at anything because nopony ever told me.
I don’t see anything in that exchange that either confirms or rules out the possibility of Scootaloo being an orphan, or of her having neglectful parents. So, still calling either one headcanon at this point, though it’s got to be one or the other.
@Marvelous TK
Right, though I’m going off of what folks are saying in many regards to IDW: “canon until it conflicts with the current show canon, then the show wins out”.
@Daneasaur
i’d say it’s equally canon, really. neither are contradicted in universe, both have support in universe, and both were said by people with exactly as much influence as to whether or not either becomes true.
@deathsia
Doesn’t change the fact that taking Scootaloo’s living situation in this direction is stupid. There’ll never be child orphans in this show, so Scootaloo’s parents being neglectful busybodies is still the likeliest theory.
pulls out her blowdart and fires it at this overly inflated creator worship
NEWS FLASH!: Lauren Faust has openly stated that her vision stopped being used as of season 3 and that the show no longer follows anything close to her original ideas for the shows cannon.
Translation: This ISN’T HER STORY ANYMORE! POP!
God, people jumping to a writer who hasn’t been on the show staff for 4 years+ is like seriously desperate.
@Background Pony #2857
I’m gonna side with BP on this one and follow up with this:
The writers/animation staff give a damn about the show’s characters,plot, and world. :)
Hasbro only cares about cash._
Making Scootaloo an orphan is a way to give her character depth. It would explain SO MUCH! Like why we haven’t seen her parents in over 7 seasons but we’ve seen Sweetie Belles and AB’s are confirmed dead. It’s why Scootaloo has struggled so much with flying and why she was in Ponyville from foalhood. Why we see her in her room but her parents are NO WHERE TO BE SEEN as she balls her eyes out!
Seriously, what parent WOULDN’T get their foal checked out when they realized she may be disabled or have abnormally small wings?
She’s had no parents for many years because they are most likely dead. I would consider her being abandoned or the parents just down right neglectful of her but not even the writers would do that so that’s just a big fat “NO!”.
They’ll never deny it, but they’ll never confirm it ;)
I think there is an unofficial rule about this somewhere that the writers have to obey. A “happy families” rule. Something like “There are no child orphans in the show!” Applejack is an exception as she is an adult.
Listen very carefully to Scootaloos words, she says that she wants parents like Rainbow Dash’s, it could just be that she has stern parents.

Pretty sure that Faust left before the season this ep is from.
“I always wondered why people took that one to a bad place.”
Umm, because it IS a bad place?
Faust is basically admitting Scootaloo is a victim of child neglect. Hard to spin that as anything other than bad.
@hype
That’s saying it nicely. Yeah.
complaining? look, I know I said it nicely, but I really had meant it

And I’ll restate:
It’s still more canon than any headcanon right now.

hey, if you give the setup, don’t complain when someone takes advantage of it
perhaps preschool would be more your speed if you can’t understand basic mannerisms
Scootaloo does have parents. But they’re horribly abusive. That’s why Scootaloo can’t fly.

And here’s the first of many… By god, just accept it!
Hell the only reason they’d give her parents at this point is if Hasbro got bad press about it or Hasbro pressured/forced the writers into doing so.
