The joke is that the word “Animate” can be interpreted as “to bring to life”
 
So Bender here wanted to learn to animate things, so he pulled some books out of a bargain bin and a thrift shop that happened to disappear the next day, and nobody he talked to ever remembered it existing in the first place. Surprise surprise, it wasn’t about making cartoons at all! It was about conjuration.
 
So, Bender ended up wasting twenty three bits on what he thought were useless books. So, Bender did as Bender does, he went on a drunken bender. And it was on that bender that Bender decided to take another look at those magic books and decided to improvise.
 
This is my headcanon and I’m sticking to it.

Okay, so if I want to learn to animate I need: alcohol, reference sheets, and a little black magic. Cool.
