Twilight Backstory:
Twilight, her older brother Shining Armor, and their parents lived in Canterlot for the first eight years of Twi’s life. Her parents, despite being nobles, helped prisoners escape the city, away from Sombra and Chrysalis. One of Sombra’s spies, however, pretended to be a prisoner and caught the Sparkles in the act. A platoon of soldiers was sent to kill the family. Twi’s parents managed to help their children escape, but they were killed in the process.
Shining, though devastated, managed to keep his wits about him and elected to follow the ‘underground railroad’ (the escape route their parents had set up) to the Crystal Empire. Once there, they requested an audience with the Empress (Cadence’s mom) and explained the situation. The Empress offered to take them in as her wards (sorta like foster kids, but more as foster friends) and have them trained.
Shining almost immediately joined the Crystal Army, but Celestia and Luna, who were basically advisers to the royal family at the time, saw great magical potential in Twi. Celestia offered to apprentice the filly to her, and Twilight eagerly accepted. She learned every spell she could, from healing incantations to arcane combat. When Applejack came to the Empire to implore the Crystal ponies to do something about Sombra, Twilight and Shining immediately offered to help.
When Twilight had just turned 20, she managed to convince Celestia to let her enter Equestria and recruit in secret. She and Spike travel together, but Twilight has a hard time getting across to other ponies, so Spike usually takes the lead in the conversations, much to Twi’s chagrin.
Spike Backstory:
His parents were killed before he was hatched by a band of rogue griffons, and Shining, who has been in the dragon kingdom at the time, brought the orphan egg back to the Empire with him. He gave it to Twilight to care for, and Spike sees her as an older sister. He went to all her lessons, helped with everything she needed help with, and even learned a few tricks of his own.
He serves as her bodyguard, casting a surprisingly ominous presence across the room (despite his adorable size). He also has quite a way with words, and could probably talk the sword out of his enemies hand. Despite this, he is also an excellent fighter, having saved Twi’s life and even Celestia’s life on more than one occasion. He is hyper observant, and can tell who the potential threats are as soon as he enters a room.
Spike is sometimes the only one Twilight can open up to when Shining is away on military business. He is an excellent therapist/counselor, and is the BEST secret keeper.
