But that only changes the question to who regulated them before the sisters. And what caused the instability in the first place.
For the record, I’m not trying to be obnoxious; I’d legitimately like answers to these questions. And yes, I’m aware just how much I’m overthinking this. That’s how I have fun! :D
I’m quite fond of the theory the princesses don’t actually control the sun/moon but rather regulate them and keep them consistant.
I thought the rail system was implied to be fairly extensive.
They barely have a rail system. And no, Luna doesn’t count.
I kind of go with the idea that it worked normally then some magical catastrophe threw everything out of wack at some point. What that was I have no idea could have been so many things that it’s not really worth speculating on with out more info.

The question is, who was moving the heavens before the unicorns figured out how? And who was doing it before them? Is it sun-movers all the way down, or was there a time when the system functioned without manual magical input? And if that’s the case, what broke it?

Actually, Heliocentrism (at least as we understand it) wouldn’t be in their Universe. The scientific explanation in their universe would be that Celestia and Luna control the Sun and Moon through a force that they have deemed Magic. They have proof that Unicorns were needed to raise the Sun and Moon in the past and that Celestia and Luna can do the same. He would just be a crazy conspiracy nut like those people who believe the Earth is flat.
